Unlocking the Power of GNSS: A Modern Guide to Navigation

The Global Positioning System (GPS), developed by the US Department of Defence, revolutionised navigation when it was first launched in 1978. Originally comprising a constellation of 24 satellites orbiting Earth, GPS allowed users to pinpoint their location by referencing these satellites.

Today, the landscape of satellite navigation has expanded significantly. Alongside GPS, systems like GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou, and others now provide enhanced global coverage. Together, these systems are known as #GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems).

GNSS receivers operate by picking up signals from multiple satellites. They calculate the distance to each satellite by measuring the signal's travel time and then applying the speed of light to determine this distance. By receiving signals from at least four satellites, a GNSS receiver can accurately determine its position anywhere on Earth.

In the field of GNSS surveying, maintaining a clear and reliable connection between the receiver and the satellites is crucial. Despite their expertise, surveyors can face unforeseen obstacles and errors. Choosing the right GNSS receiver can make a significant difference in the efficiency and accuracy of their work.

For insights on navigating everyday GNSS challenges and tips for overcoming them both in the field and in the office, check out our latest blog post.

Navigating Challenges in Mobile Mapping

In the fast-paced world of geospatial data collection, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of mobile mapping systems is crucial. This is especially important in densely built urban areas—known as “urban canyons”—and on roads heavily covered by tree canopies. In these challenging environments, maintaining a clear and consistent connection between the moving vehicle and satellites becomes significantly more difficult.

Just like in land surveying, having a clear line of sight to the sky is essential for precise mapping. However, mobile mapping systems equipped with advanced globally available positioning engines are specifically designed to tackle these challenges. This technology ensures that professionals in any geospatial field can achieve high-quality results, both in the field and back at the office.
