An update of where I am these days and where you can find me

An update of where I am these days and where you can find me

Some overdue housekeeping... I've updated my LinkedIn profile to reflect my resignation as director of comms2point0 last summer.

I'm very proud to have co-founded comms2point0 in 2011 and we did some great things in the early days I'm proud of. They were exciting days when I took the plunge solo to leave the security of a regular job behind. However, new vistas open up and it makes sense to tidy things up.

So, key message: you'll be able to find me by emailing [email protected] and at the web address danslee.co.uk. Drop me a line there and say hello.

I registered my own company - Dan Slee C2 Ltd - at Companies House in 2013 the same year as I registered comms2point0 and that's been the flag I've been sailing under for some time.

I began training people in the skills needed to communicate better 12-years ago. First as a senior local government officer and then as time has passed as a freelance digital communications consultant.

I've been looking at the numbers this week. I've trained more than 4,000 people from more than 1,100 companies and organisations across the UK and Ireland. From Aberdeenshire to Cornwall and from Limerick and Dublin to Cardiff via Essex, London. And Brighton. There have been Government departments too, a pub chain and a burger company.

I'm third generation public sector. My Grandpa was a headteacher and my Dad a town planner. I keep my eye in with working on projects but I love seeing what people do with new skills I've helped pass to them.

It's not always been easy. At times, it's been remarkably hard. But there have been some good people along the way who have been an inspiration and a support. I've travelled thousands of miles and spent many nights in Travelodges. Some years, I was away more than 100 nights. The pandemic put a stop to all that overnight. A silver lining has been able to spend more time at home with the family. I've shifted training online, testing it and improving it as things as I've gone.

I've believed in the network since I came across the social web in 2008. I'm proud to have co-founded the largest unconference for public sector comms people anywhere in the world commscamp. I'm also proud of the Public Sector Comms Headspace Facebook group which has grown to almost 6,000 members. I've learned more from them than anyone.

Because I've been busy I've been slow to brand what I've done under my own distinct banner. I've slowly been rolling out my own logo and strapline. It's orange white and black.

Why orange? Because its the colour of creativity and emotional energy that needs to be shared. Besides, orange is the colour of the Dutch football team of the early 1970s.

My strapline 'Future comms made easy' is the basic essence of what I do.

John Higgs in 'Future Uncertain: Adventures in the 20th Century' makes the point that the future seems scary but it wasn't always so. In cinema, he points out that the last film to approach the future with optimism was 'Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure' in 1989. In Mad Max II in 1981 they had to explain that the oil had run out.

Today, we don't need an explanation. We feel that the future is scary and we're wary of what is coming down the tracks. My niche is to understand the basics of the past. It's also to know the data and the how things will work today and tomorrow.
