I have concern about the strategy being followed in one respect: the failure to close schools. The Minister has elected to delay this and will only consider closures by school or area right now. Although I appreciate that the NZ Public is being gradually accustomed to more restrictive measures as empirical evidence of the virus emerges, we need to be careful, in the absence of generalised testing, that we are not behind the 8-ball in detecting community transmission especially asymptomatic carriers. ?Waiting for community transmission to be identified when it is inevitable appears to fly in the face of scientific evidence. Nicholas Christakis, a Yale social scientist and physician, looked at the pros and cons. He strongly recommends school closures as a way of reducing the risk of community transmission despite inconvenience when transmission is identified nearby.
