Update on my Book - Data for Business Performance

Update on my Book - Data for Business Performance

Last year in July, I published a post in LinkedIn on my book writing project on the theme of transforming business data into an enterprise asset. I have been working on this project for over 15 months and this week I signed the publishing contract with Technics, a New York based publishing house. Technics is a reputed publication house and has published works of Bill Inmon (Father of the Data Warehousing), Dr. Tom Redman  (The Data Doctor), among others.

The book will be titled - "Data for Business Performance".  Renowned Analytics and Data Quality expert Dr. Tom Redman has agreed to write the foreword for the book. Dr. Redman is an authority in  the field of Information Management and he has helped dozens of leaders and organizations better understand the importance of high-quality data.

What problems does this book solve for its reader? Why did I write this book? As you have heard or seen many progressive organizations see data as a potential business asset. While many companies are investing in improved data management, only a few have leveraged data that impact business performance. In this backdrop, the book “Data for Business Performance” has 5 key elements that will make it special in the marketplace.

  1. The book is holistic. Today deriving value from data is almost synonymous with insights. But enterprises use data not only for insights but also for adhering to compliance and for improved levels of service. Hence this book looks at all three purposes of data and its management in 10 key data lifecycle functions.
  2. The book is for practitioners by the practitioners. It equips the reader with the practical guidance and proven techniques to derive value from business data. Along with my experience, business and IT leaders from companies such as GE, Gartner, P&G, IKEA, Reliance, Cenovus Energy, Infineon, Microsoft, and many more will be sharing their experiences in the book.
  3. The book is relevant. Today organizations operate under stiff competition, expanded business networks, and emerging technologies (such as cloud computing, social media, NoSQL, big data, in-memory computing, machine learning and many more). This book suits the current business and IT landscape.
  4. The book is novel. I have used GQM (Goal-Question-Metric), a proven performance management framework and derived a 10 step Information management model (IMM) that can help practitioners harness the value of business data.
  5. The book is tool agnostic. Most books available in the market are IT product centric. Any business leader who is keen to derive value from data can use this book regardless of any technologies from any product vendor.

Most of my posts in the last few months were related to the book as I wanted to get a good feedback. Special thanks to all of you for giving your feedback and sharing your perspectives on my articles in LinkedIn. However as part of my contract with Technics, I will not be able to share any more articles related to the book in the public domain.

The book is expected to be out in the market including Amazon early next year. And the book will be priced very reasonably. :)

Thanks once again and I will continue to look forward for your support.
