Connecting the Dots: The Forging of Great Character
Here’s a follow-up on my last post, in which I will share with you what we consider to be essential attributes (both professionally and personally) to building good character - or, to use David Brooks’ words: our “road to character”.
'Connecting the Dots' is made of 10 chapters. Each chapter aims to provide a holistic view on a studied trait as follows:
- Awareness: The first step on the journey of character building is having a clear understanding of who we are- our strengths, weaknesses, values, behaviors, reactions, and most importantly, our purpose- and who we want to become.
- Acceptance: Accepting situations (and people) for what they are and responding to life with grace and wisdom.
- Emotions: Identifying and understanding your emotional responses, patterns and triggers to manage them effectively.
- Change: Expecting, embracing and going through change positively in order to grow.
- Resilience: Dealing with setbacks with neutrality and strength; and refilling our “resilience tank” to be better equipped for future challenges.
- Fear: Understanding, facing and overcoming our fears. This is an empowering process which is fundamental to expand our personal and professional development.
- Mindset: Addressing how our thoughts, attitudes and narratives ultimately create our reality.
- Ego: Being aware of the role of ego in our lives and how to keep it in check. This is essential for making optimal decisions as we go through life.
- Generosity: Being generous with time, knowledge, energy and resources positively enhances our well-being, as well as, the well-being of those around us.
- Gratitude: The mother of all virtues- the final dot which we believe connects all the rest, and is the very basis of an inspiring character.
It is when we connect all the dots and go through our journey- each in our own way and at our own pace- that we can launch into our journey of personal transformation.
I hope that the traits we have chosen as well as the studies we’ve done on each one inspires you, and provides you with added knowledge and practical guidance.
I leave you with Rumi‘s eternal question:
“And you, when will you begin that long journey into yourself?”

5 年Brilliant. These are the kind of evergreen points on which volumes can be written. Each point is a chasm I think... I can’t choose which one is most important. Perhaps they all are. For me, at the moment, Awareness boomerangs the most. People who are comfortable in their own skin are unique, rare and mostly dependable. Thanks for the article

5 年It`s a life long journey Samia Bouazza. Thought provoking and I`m a big fan of Rumi. You could arrange that list in several ways and add more points along the journey - love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness and happiness come to mind. What do you feel Teresa Spelman O’ Keeffe for an interesting conversation?
