Update Germany > FLOODING

On July 15, 2021, parts of Germany have been heavily flooded (80 liters of rain per square meter).

Affected are the region around the Ahr river in Rhineland-Palatinate and parts of the Eifel region in North Rine-Westphalia. The water level of the Ahr river was around 7 m (compared to 0,50 - 1 m regular water level) and it had a width up to 400 m.

150+ people died in the floods, around 100 people are still missing, hundreds of families lost their houses; 14 schools are heavily damaged and 7000 pupils need to be assigned to other schools; 20 km rail track, more than 100 km roads and 40+ bridges are completely destroyed.

Gas and water supply in some cities will have to be renewed completely.

What we have never seen before is the readiness of the German population to help. Apart from the financial support (charity organizations collected already donations close to 100 Million Euro) - people are driving to the affected areas to help people they don’t even know – with manual labor, with heavy equipment to clear the roads, with food and toiletries; hotels are offering free accomodation, rental car companies are renting the cars for free – it is unbelievable how much help is coming from the fellow citizens.

It will take years until the serious damage is repaired and people go back to normal life, if possible at all.

Politicians are now ?busy“ with recrimination and trying to find out why the warning system didn’t work. Ecologists are blaming the global warming for this catastrophe.

The moving business is only affected in the flooded areas but since no major corporations are located there, this is not of great concern.
