Upcoming Tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China Set for March 4 - De Minimis Removal Postponed

The new tariffs include a 25% tariff on most Canadian and Mexican imports, with a lower 10% rate for Canadian energy products like crude oil and natural gas. In addition, all Chinese imports will face an extra 10% tariff, raising the total tariff on Chinese goods to 20%. These measures are part of the administration’s strategy to address trade imbalances and national security concerns.

?At the same time, the U.S. had planned to remove the de minimis rule for imports from Canada and Mexico, which would have eliminated duty-free entry for low-value shipments. However, this change has been postponed for now. This means that shipments valued below $800 will continue to enter duty-free—but the removal could still happen in the future if the Secretary of Commerce determines that systems are in place to collect tariffs effectively.

?In a separate development, a new Section 232 investigation into copper imports has been launched. This review will determine whether copper imports pose a national security risk and could lead to future tariffs or trade restrictions on raw and refined copper, alloys, and scrap.
