The Convention on the Rights of the Child was adopted in?1989?by the United Nations General Assembly.?It has changed the way children are treated.Children?are no longer viewed as passive recipients of charity but as human beings with a distinct set of rights.The Convention recognises that childhood is a vulnerable period and that children need special care and protection.

It is the?first global set of legally binding rights to apply to all children. It has been ratified by every country on earth, with the exception of the United States, making it the most widely ratified human rights agreement in history.

It sets the standards for children’s well-being at each stage of their development. It applies to?every person?under the age of eighteen years (the definition of a child),?regardless of their gender, origin, religion, and disability.

The Convention on the Rights of the Child is guided by?four fundamental principles?that apply to every child:

1. The principle of non-discrimination
2. The principle of the best interests of the child
3. The principle of the right to survival, development, and protection
4. The principle of the right to freedom of opinion and participation
