Up in the Air: A Haunting Flight Amidst War's Shadow

Witnessing the Impact of War on a Flight

As I settled into my seat on a transatlantic flight, I couldn't help but notice the somber atmosphere that engulfed the entire cabin. I was traveling with my nine-year-old daughter, looking forward to the much-celebrated Opportunity Collaboration (@ocimpact) in Miches, Dominican Republic. When on the gorgeous Emirates Airbus 380, I see passengers typically joyous, loud, cheerful, friendly and interactive- after all that flight is almost fifteen hours long from Dubai to New York. But this was no ordinary journey. I found myself amidst a groups of families who were fleeing their homes, leaving behind everything they knew and loved, all because of a war that had torn their lives apart. The conflicting emotions of despair and hope swirled within me as I shared this flight with these souls.

What was more sobering to me was that these families were from both sides, there were Palestinian and Israeli families, a stark reminder of the cruel reality of war. Their faces carried the world's weight, etched with the scars of unimaginable experiences. Children clung to their parents, the infants and toddlers clueless about the sudden journey, and the uncertainty they face. Adolescents and young adults' eyes wide with fear and innocence lost. I met elderly individuals, who had undoubtedly seen their fair share of life's hardships, and now faced an uncertain future with a sense of resilience that was nothing short of inspiring.

I couldn't help but feel conflicted. On one hand, I was grateful to be going on a business trip and living with freedom in India. On the other hand, the profound sorrow that enveloped these families was palpable, leaving me questioning the unfairness of war and conflict. I wondered about the senseless destruction and suffering caused by wars, as people fleeing their homes should never become a norm. Is this the world my child will grow into?

As I observed the families around me, I couldn't help but reflect on their trauma. The horrors of war had forced them to leave their homes, communities, and way of life behind. They were carrying their memories, dreams, and loved ones in their hearts' fragile sanctuary. It was a heart-wrenching testament to the resilience of the human spirit, which can endure the darkest of days and still find the strength to hope.

In that confined space, hope was a fragile yet powerful companion. It was the glimmer of optimism in a sea of despair, a reminder that humanity can persevere even in the most challenging circumstances. Hope was the belief that better days lay ahead, that the scars of war would one day heal, and that the sacrifices made by these families were not in vain.

No one wins in a war. The true cost of conflict is measured not in victories or losses on the battlefield but in the shattered lives, broken families, and lost dreams it leaves in its wake. This flight was a poignant reminder that wars are destructive and devastating, affecting the innocent in ways that defy comprehension. It reminded us that peace is the most precious gift we can offer ourselves and future generations.

As the plane soared through the clouds, I couldn't help but hold onto the hope that one day, the families I shared that flight with would find solace, safety, and a chance to rebuild their lives. The journey ahead would be arduous, but in their resilience, I saw the unwavering strength of the human spirit. In their eyes, I found hope; in that hope, I found a glimmer of light in the darkest times. In my turmoil, I hugged my little one a little tighter. This flight was a gross reminder that no one truly wins in a war, but perhaps, one day, we can all win by choosing the path of peace and understanding.

Thank you Angela for sharing your thoughts so beautifully. They resonate with my own as I am sure with several others. There is violence, uncertainty, stress, anxiety, loss, grief, sadness destruction and l almost feel guilty of the peace, the safety and security that I enjoy ( and take for granted). Hope and pray that soon there will be peace and all affected will build back their lives

Your blog is a way to connect with others who may be going through similar experiences.

Angela (Angela Chaudhuri ) I am insanely proud of you and your journey everyday. But most importantly I am so glad you choose to allow yourself to feel, reflect and to write for us to absorb- no matter how difficult it is and how unnerving the setting. To quote you "As the plane soared through the clouds, I couldn't help but hold onto the hope that one day, the families I shared that flight with would find solace, safety, and a chance to rebuild their lives. " Amen sister. Thank you for holding space.
