1/ The Holst Birthplace Trust & PlayLabZ: An Immersive Audiovisual Arts Odyssey / With Hands on DiY Volumetric, Virtual Production and SubPac Demo?

This September Cheltenham is hosting a series of events to celebrate the 150th birthday of musical icon Gustav Holst, including a free community event at Imperial Gardens on the seminal composer's birthday this September, PlayLa.bZ are collaborating with The Holst Birthplace Trust & switched on creative minds at University of Gloucestershire - School of Creative Arts, to join us in being part of pop culture history for Holst 150.

"The Planets is a stunning piece of music. The inspiration it holds for modern cinema is undeniable. It deserves its place in history as one of the most seminal & iconic pieces ever written." CultureSlate

Laura Kinnear, Curator of the Holst Victorian House: is often inspired by artefacts when writing - this is true of her novel, 'A Forest of Things', which she began after seeing a 16th-century map of Danzig in the National Library of Scotland. Laura lives in Stroud and has worked in museums for over fifteen years and is creatively producing the Holst 150 Celebrations, with Arts Council England SW, Cheltenham Festivals, UoG, The Wilson Museum & PlayLa.bZ CIC

2/ All Aboard Holst’s Spaceship Earth - CHROMATOUCH Full Dome - A Cosmic Audiovisual Createch Maker Workshop

LEON TRIMBLE (CHROMATOUCH)

Birmingham School Modular Techno

https://www.ligo.org/magazine/LIGO-magazine-issue24.pdf#page=30

A mind expanding hands on workshop Leon will take the four most popular Holst planets tracks. And elicit responses from the creative minds in the room. Two will be audio. Two will be visual. Some will make analogue content. Some will make digital processing. Then together will craft a bite size cosmic sight & sound performance.

“Fully mobilised on the rhythm front, but organic and variable in its curvy interlocking.” The Brooklyn Rail.

Leon is an audiovisual artist regularly gigging in the UK and Europe. He has a history of doing visuals at many festivals including Shambala, Glastonbury, Moseley Folk, The Big Chill and Maschina Bristronica.

He is a resident VJ at House of God. His music has developed around the use of tech that pairs up with those visuals, over the past few years with modular synths, and he takes sonic journeys through low drones and floor smashing rhythms. In 2022 he supported Regis, Suzanne Ciani, Sote, Steve Davis, Graham Dunning amongst others…

Leon has always been involved in starting and running grassroots music projects like Jigsawmusic, 8bit Lounge, Birmingham Modular Organisation and most recently Drone Bath that has taken place in Moseley Road Baths, The Herbert Museum and Art Gallery, and Victoria Baths in Manchester. He has worked with Astrophysicists on his Gravity Synth project, even bouncing the sounds of the synth off the surface of the moon from inside Abbey Road Studios.

Description:

Gustav Holst, was deeply immersed in Indian culture and philosophy? This connection shaped his work, and Cheltenham's own history as a "Calcutta in the Cotswolds" provides a unique and inspiring environment for exploring this multi-cultural fusion of creative arts.

In this experimental workshop led by artist Dinesh Patel, we'll connect Holst's fascination with Hindu mythology and art while unleashing our own creativity through the exploration of line, pattern and music.

  • Spirograph Tribe: Embrace the meditative flow of creating intricate geometric patterns.
  • No Boundaries Creativity: Experiment with compasses, protractors, and other tools to create structured patterns, then let your intuition guide you in breaking the rules with organic lines.
  • Find Your Inner & Outer Flow: Experience the calming and mindful benefits of this artistic process.
  • Connecting the Cosmic Dots: Discover the surprising links between Holst's music, Indian art, and your own artistic expression.
