Unveiling The Stigma Coach? Monthly Newsletter: Breaking the Chains of Stigma

Dear LinkedIn Community,

I am thrilled to announce the relaunch of my LinkedIn? newsletter. The Stigma Coach? newsletter will gift you strategies to overcome stigma in all its forms. I will also share mindset tips to enhance your life and aid you in discovering your authentic self.

What is Stigma??

The Cambridge Dictionary defines stigma as “a strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair…” (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/stigma)

To make this complex concept accessible to all, let's break it down using the "Explain it like I'm 5" principle.?

Stigma is when people dislike someone or something about them. It might be how they look, their race, where they are from, their beliefs, or because they have a chronic illness or a disability. Stigma is not a positive feeling, and I want to help people who feel stigmatised to learn how to beat it.

Types of Stigma:?

There are many types of stigma prevalent in our society, each with its own set of challenges. These include:

  1. Disability Stigma
  2. Mental Health Stigma
  3. Substance Use Stigma
  4. HIV/AIDS Stigma
  5. Obesity Stigma
  6. Race and Ethnicity Stigma

This list is not every type of stigma. However, these are the most common I have?

Why Overcoming Stigma is Crucial

It is vital to overcome stigma because it can lead to unfair treatment. This could be someone ending up without a job or housing. Stigma can also make people feel alone and withdraw from social activities. Something we also need to be aware of is self-stigma. This is where people take negative messages about their condition to heart, causing shame, guilt, and low self-esteem.

Imagine through no fault of your own, merely through the environment you grew up in, you develop a deep feeling of shame for existing. For being a member of the LGBTQA+ community. For having a chronic illness, a disability, or neurodiverse/neurospicey. Or even for wanting to do a specific job that those around you dislike. Now, imagine learning to overcome that, and to embrace “the real you” (Or as I define it, to discover your Intuitive Self Identity?). “How can I do this?” I hear you ask, well read on and you will learn.?

How to Overcome Stigma

There are 2 things to think about when looking to overcome stigma. The first is you, and the other is society. Let’s start with you, as this is often an easier first step. By addressing the feelings others leave you with, and by releasing any negativity around it, you will be able to.

Only when we build an understanding about a condition, can it be normalised. Creating supportive communities for those affected fosters a sense of connection and understanding. Speaking up for policies that protect the rights of affected individuals contributes to building a fairer society.

The Benefits of Overcoming Stigma

The positive impacts of overcoming stigma are vast, including increased access to healthcare, improved social and emotional well-being, and the creation of a more inclusive society. Let's explore some examples:

  • A person with a mental illness may be more likely to seek treatment if they don't feel ashamed.
  • A person with a substance use disorder may be more likely to enter recovery if they don't feel judged.
  • A person with HIV/AIDS may lead a healthy life without fear of discrimination.
  • A person with obesity may improve their health without feeling ashamed.
  • A person with a disability may take part in society without facing discrimination.
  • A person of colour may achieve their full potential without facing racism and discrimination.

Conclusion

While overcoming stigma is a crucial step towards creating a fairer and just society. It fosters respect and dignity, and creates a better world for everyone. If you or someone you know is affected by stigma, many resources are available, including trusted friends, support groups, and professional help.

Let's work together to break free from the chains of stigma and create a brighter, stigma-free future for all.

Warm regards,

Dave - The Stigma Coach?
