Can you briefly introduce yourself and share a bit about your background in the STEM field?????????
I knew from an early age that I wanted to work with tech, and I recognized that the easiest way to start was by coding. So, I took programming classes at Enloe High School in Raleigh, NC, where they offered Computer Science up to an AP level. This gave me four years of solid Computer Science education before I began my undergraduate studies at Appalachian State University, majoring in Computer Science. During my studies, I interned and later worked at IBM in the RTP area, exposing me to the intricate workings of a large tech giant. This experience laid the foundation for my understanding of large enterprise infrastructure and the role of software within such vast ecosystems. It was a challenging yet valuable period, but I also felt like I was just a number in such a massive company. This theme of finding the right organization size to let my talents shine continued to shape my career. I eventually transitioned to work as a Developer for a financial services company. At that time, there was a prevailing notion that banks were evolving into technology companies and had the financial resources to support cutting-edge tech projects. However, my experience in finance revealed that these businesses were primarily driven by profitability rather than a genuine desire to help others. It became clear that improving access to government services through technology was a critical need, and this realization led me to GovTech consulting. This field offered the perfect blend of challenging technical scenarios and meaningful work, creating a dynamic and fulfilling career path for me.
What initially attracted you to your current STEM career?
I've been fascinated by programming since a young age. Growing up during the rise of internet companies added an extra layer of excitement for technology. Moreover, I realized early on that the traditional school setting wasn't the best fit for me. I sought a degree that would provide a strong knowledge base achievable with a bachelor's degree, and Computer Science perfectly aligned with that aspiration.
Transition Story
Could you describe a significant career transition you've experienced in your STEM journey? What prompted this change?
I underwent two major transitions when I started working in GovTech consulting. Firstly, I shifted from being a hands-on programmer to becoming a Director responsible for a delivery vertical and maintaining a book of business. Initially, I was hired to lead a small team of Developers working on a legacy application. As the firm expanded, I observed other similar custom application development teams operating independently. I proposed the idea of introducing a layer of management above these teams to free up senior leadership for strategic initiatives while I focused on tactical delivery. Leadership embraced this proposal as it addressed an immediate business challenge. Secondly, this transition involved understanding the company size where I thrived best. My career took me from tech behemoths to a midsize financial services firm, boutique consulting firms, and startups. I'm inherently drawn to challenging and dynamic environments where I'm not just in tech but deeply involved in understanding other aspects like sales, hiring, and building culture. This multidimensional experience spices up my day-to-day work.
How did you navigate the challenges and uncertainties associated with this transition?
Without any formal business school training, I found understanding finances, marketing, contract negotiations, and general growth forecasting to be somewhat mysterious. Fortunately, there are abundant free resources available to learn about these topics. I enrolled in free courses on Coursera to gain knowledge in these areas and dived right into practical application. I learn best by doing, so in consulting, understanding and projecting consultant utilization rates is crucial to an organization's financial health. I began with a simple spreadsheet and started inputting numbers, iterating and refining the process until I could accurately predict and maintain a high utilization rate for my team. Reading also played a significant role in my development. I delved into books on various subjects, including business (e.g., Zero to None, Lean Startup), productivity (e.g., Deep Work, Seven Habits of Highly Effective People), and philosophy and human nature (e.g., Meditations, Thinking, Fast and Slow).
Career Transition Motivations
What were the key motivations behind your career transition? Were there specific goals you wanted to achieve?
I've always aspired to be a leader. I'm naturally inclined to take charge in challenging situations, and I've developed a deep sense of empathy for others. While working as a hands-on coder for over a decade and experiencing diverse cultures, I gained insights into the types of cultures that enhance an individual's well-being, growth, and productivity. I knew that if I were in a leadership position, I could bring about positive change. Ultimately, I'm passionate about building meaningful things with exceptional people. Where I stand in the hierarchy isn't crucial; it's the opportunity to lead from the front and be in the trenches that matters most to me.
How did you identify that it was the right time for a career transition?
For me, it was a combination of a lack of a cohesive strategy and growing uncertainty that drove the desire for change. I quickly realized that contracts were the lifeblood of consulting, and I wanted a pulse on that aspect for my own peace of mind. I knew that taking on these responsibilities would provide me with that insight. Moreover, as I mentioned earlier, my aspiration to be a leader was a driving force throughout my career. In this particular situation, it felt like the right place at the right time.
Leadership and Development
How did you approach the transition from an individual contributor role to a leadership position? What were the key skills you focused on developing?
Understanding the business side of things was the most significant skills gap I needed to bridge. While I possessed an innate understanding of culture building and people management, I lacked sophistication in areas such as finance and contract negotiation. Fortunately, these skills are learnable, and I found that I learned best by practical application. For instance, in consulting, understanding and projecting consultant utilization rates are critical to an organization's financial health. I began with a simple spreadsheet and iterated until I achieved precision in predicting and maintaining high utilization for my team.
Can you share your insights on effective leadership and how it impacts a STEM career?
Fundamentally people desire three things: growth, impact, and respect.
People want to develop their skills, make a difference, and feel valued and trusted. These needs aren't unique to STEM careers, but they're often not emphasized enough in the field. In professions like law or accounting, there are established growth tracks. In STEM, this structure is often lacking, but it's essential for leaders to establish practices that address these fundamental human needs.
Switching Careers or Starting a Business
What advice would you give to STEM professionals considering a career change or entrepreneurship?
Many companies today, regardless of their industry, have a significant tech component. The skills acquired in STEM are highly transferable to other fields. STEM professionals are natural builders, whether it's software, medicine, or statistical analysis. Taking this problem-solving mindset into other careers or entrepreneurship can be highly beneficial.

Technical and Soft Skills
What technical and soft skills have been instrumental in your success during career transitions?
Recently, I've noticed a significant shift towards unstructured asynchronous messaging tools like Slack and Teams, which have fundamentally changed communication patterns. Email's importance has dwindled. Initially, I treated instant messages as requiring immediate attention and emails as something that could wait. This distinction no longer holds true. Understanding evolving communication models and ensuring they don't hinder your growth is crucial. For soft skills, empathy and the ability to put oneself in another person's shoes have been invaluable. Challenges in my career, along with guidance from mentors, have helped me develop these skills. Additionally, my ability to articulate ideas verbally and create a vision for others has proven essential. I honed this through practice, learning from stumbling through presentations and realizing that people remember how you make them feel more than the specifics of what you say.
How did you acquire or develop these skills?
Learning new tools and approaches is best done by jumping right in. Download the tool and start using it. It might take time to gain momentum, but practice and feedback from others are invaluable. Consider every endeavor as a draft or iteration. This mindset shift was significant for me. You don't need to have all the data at the beginning; it's about starting, learning, and adapting based on evolving information.
Overcoming Challenges
What were some of the main challenges you faced during your career transitions, and how did you overcome them?
Transitioning from being peers to a leader of people was difficult. I'm naturally laid-back and easygoing, and establishing myself as a manager within the hierarchy presented challenges. To address this, I began using data extensively to manage people. We worked together to set clear goals and documented each individual's trajectory. During regular meetings, we revisited these goals, identifying roadblocks and successes. This approach helped reduce emotional aspects from the process.
Were there any setbacks or failures that ultimately contributed to your growth?
One significant challenge was having my first conversation with an employee who was facing performance issues. I struggled with this initially because I dislike difficult conversations, especially when they involve someone not meeting my expectations. What helped was reframing my expectations and adopting a more understanding approach. Recognizing that people are humans with lives and adopting a data-driven approach removed bias and made the conversation about facts.

How has networking and mentorship played a role in your career transitions? Do you have any tips for building meaningful professional relationships?
Authenticity is key. Be yourself. I tend to be informal and enjoy humor, and once I started being genuine, it resonated with people. In the tech industry, many individuals hide behind jargon and technical details. Speaking plainly and authentically is what people appreciate, rather than acronyms and buzzwords.
Balancing Ambition and Realism
Balancing ambition with practicality is important during career transitions. How did you strike this balance to set achievable goals?
Finding this balance has been challenging for me. For a long time, I believed that my career and success defined me. I used to ask people, "What do you do for work?" as if it defined their entire identity. However, I came to realize that my friends and family love me regardless of my professional success. This realization was profound. I now understand that I'm defined by my values and relationships, not my job title. Balancing remains a significant challenge, but I've developed a strong focus on the task at hand, whether it's work or personal life. I establish work hours, prioritize tasks, and maintain a clear understanding of my goals.

Based on your experiences, what advice would you offer to STEM professionals who are considering a career transition, promotion, or starting a business?
The skills you've acquired are highly applicable to other industries. The methodical approach to problem-solving, designing solutions, and thinking holistically about processes provides a unique perspective that can benefit various fields.

The abundance mindset has been a guiding principle for me. Opportunities are out there; it's a matter of seeking and seizing them.

Being involved in GovTech consulting has profoundly impacted my ability to improve the lives of millions.
