Unveiling the Spectacular Arkansas Music Pavilion: Where Music Meets Innovation
Birdair, Inc.
Birdair is the leading specialty contractor for custom tensile membrane structures throughout the world.
In the heart of Pinnacle Hills in Rogers, Arkansas, music enthusiasts now have a reason to rejoice as the transformed Arkansas Music Pavilion (AMP) stands tall, ready to host unforgettable concerts rain or shine. Thanks to the 37,000 sq.ft. PTFE-coated fiberglass design by Birdair in 2014, the expert in custom tensile architecture, the AMP boasts a unique three-cone and four-inverted-cone-shaped structure, revolutionizing the concert experience in Northwest Arkansas.
A Vision Realized
The journey of the AMP began when Walton Arts Center (WAC) acquired it in February 2011 with a vision to broaden its audience and provide a permanent venue for diverse entertainment. The success of the AMP at the Washington County Fairgrounds in 2012, marked by a remarkable 200 percent increase in ticket sales, spurred the decision to establish a permanent site. The lack of a roof had led to weather-related cancellations, prompting the WAC to take a bold step.
In 2013, the Walton Arts Center council greenlit plans for a mid-sized, permanent outdoor amphitheater. The new site, strategically located in Pinnacle Hills, offers convenient access, ample parking, and a supportive infrastructure, making it an ideal location for arts and entertainment in the region. Generously donated land from Hunt Ventures, Inc., played a pivotal role in the project's success.
A Symphony in Design and Construction
To ensure the AMP was not only beautiful and unique but also weather-resistant, Birdair was brought in to design and construct the striking tent-like covering for the stage. The three-cone and four-inverted-cone-shaped structure, crafted from PTFE fiberglass membrane and steel, creates an open, inviting space that comes alive with glowing lights and the cheers of thousands of fans.

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), known by the brand name Teflon?, coats a woven fiberglass to form a membrane that is not only extremely durable but also weather-resistant. The fabric's versatility and durability make it an ideal choice for the hot and humid Arkansas summers, ensuring that the music plays on regardless of the weather.
Aesthetics, Efficiency, and Sustainability
The AMP's aesthetic appeal goes beyond its unique design. The PTFE fiberglass membrane, energy-efficient and certified by Energy Star and the Cool Roof Rating Council, reflects up to 73 percent of the sun's energy. This not only creates an inviting atmosphere for evening concerts but also contributes to the venue's overall sustainability. The lightweight membrane reduces the need for extensive structural support, offering a cost-effective solution with long spans of column-free space.
In essence, the Arkansas Music Pavilion has been transformed into a stunning work of architecture that not only captivates with its visual drama but also harmonizes with the environment and budgets. As the three-cone structure lights up in the evenings, music fans at the AMP are in for an immersive experience that transcends the ordinary, making the venue a major stop for big touring concerts in the Mid-South. The AMP is not just a place for music; it's a testament to the seamless fusion of innovation, design, and the love of the arts.
