In this latest edition of Purpose with Myriem, we delve into a topic that often lurks in the shadows, yet profoundly impacts our journey towards purpose and success: the ego.
The reason I've chosen to explore this topic today is deeply personal. Recently, I found myself in a situation where I felt my ego had gotten the best of me, despite years of dedicated work as a life and career coach. It served as a stark reminder that we are all works in progress, regardless of our expertise or experience. What's important is acknowledging our shortcomings, learning from them, and striving to do better next time. So, let's dive into this topic with humility and openness, knowing that our journey towards overcoming ego is ongoing and ever-evolving. After all, recognising our own vulnerabilities is the first step towards growth and authenticity.
So what exactly is the ego? At its core, the ego is the sense of self, the part of us that identifies with our accomplishments, possessions, and perceptions of ourselves. It manifests in various ways, from the need for validation and recognition to the fear of failure and the reluctance to accept criticism.
Why does the ego interfere with our quest for purpose? The ego's relentless pursuit of self-preservation and validation often leads us astray. It blinds us to our true passions and talents, clouding our judgment and steering us towards paths dictated by societal norms or superficial desires.
Consider how the ego manifests in our search for purpose and career fulfilment. It may lead us to pursue professions solely for status or financial gain, rather than genuine passion and alignment with our values. It may also hinder our growth by fostering resistance to change or constructive feedback, trapping us in a cycle of stagnation.
Confronting and overcoming the ego is no easy feat. It requires introspection, humility, and a willingness to embrace vulnerability. Those who succeed in taming their ego are often the strongest, most purposeful people, capable of transcending self-imposed limitations and embracing their true calling.

So, how can we identify and mitigate the influence of our ego on our journey towards purpose? Start by cultivating self-awareness. Pay attention to moments of defensiveness, insecurity, or resistance—they often signal the presence of the ego. Practice mindfulness, prayers and reflection to uncover underlying motivations and fears driving ego-driven behaviour.
Next, embrace humility and openness. Recognise that growth and fulfilment require continuous learning and adaptation. Be receptive to feedback, even when it challenges your ego, and view setbacks as opportunities for growth rather than reflections of personal worth.
Finally, cultivate a sense of purpose that transcends the ego's narrow confines. Focus on contributing to something greater than yourself, whether it's serving others, championing a cause, or pursuing creative expression. When purpose becomes the guiding force in your life, the ego loses its grip, paving the way for genuine fulfilment and success.
