Unveiling the Power of Values in Leadership: A Personal Journey

Have you ever considered the pivotal role that values play in leadership? Do you bring your values to the forefront every day at work? Have you been grappling with the notion of maintaining different values in your professional and personal life?

In my quest to understand the profound impact of values on leadership, I stumbled upon Brené Brown's insightful research summary. She aptly stated, "we can't live into values that we can't name, AND living into values requires moving from lofty aspirations to specific, observable behaviors."

For a significant part of my leadership journey, I didn't delve deeply into my values and their role in my life. Despite taking various leadership and personality assessments, I found articulating my values to be a challenging endeavor. It was a journey of self-discovery to unearth the connection between my beliefs, who I was being, and the values that resonated with me.

Choosing my values proved to be a meticulous process, especially when narrowing them down to the top five. Through multiple iterations, I strived to comprehend how my values manifested in both my professional and personal life.

Today, I am excited to share my core values with you: Communication, Collaboration, Integrity, Trust, and Love.

Communication, the cornerstone of any relationship, eliminates guesswork, narratives, and assumptions. It provides clarity, allowing me to understand where I stand and what steps to take next. Effectively communicating my needs and goals to my team propels us successfully to the next stage.

Collaboration, an often-underestimated skill, opens the door to unlimited success. Creating a team that collaborates seamlessly and works as a cohesive unit is essential for achieving shared goals. As a leader, fostering collaboration is a skill that sets the stage for a thriving team.

Building a team rooted in trust is my modus operandi. I create a safe environment where team members feel empowered to share ideas and provide feedback. Trust is the bedrock that enables us to work as one, with a shared vision and collaborative effort. This trust is earned over time, reinforcing the power of my values.

Integrity, the linchpin of leadership, requires aligning words with actions. Providing honest feedback, seeking help when needed, and taking accountability for mistakes foster a culture of honesty and trust. It's this integrity that makes me a human and a leader worth following.

Finally, the most cherished value of all—Love. Leading from a place of love in both personal and professional spheres allows all other values to harmonize. It empowers me to navigate difficult conversations, tackle complex projects, and build teams from the heart, free from fear or self-interest.
