Unveiling the Person Behind the Big Title and Logo: Embracing a Multi-Dimensional Identity

Unveiling the Person Behind the Big Title and Logo: Embracing a Multi-Dimensional Identity

If I asked who you are, what would you say?

CEO. Entrepreneur. Artist. Engineer. Consultant?

Often, we tend to identify ourselves solely based on our work titles, believing that our professional roles define our entire identity. But is that truly who we are? Let's explore the trap of workism, the importance of building a whole life, and the realization that a profession is not our sole personality.

The trap in workism is associating our full identity and self-worth with our work. We fall into the belief that our job title is all-encompassing, neglecting the multitude of other dimensions that shape us as individuals. We must remember that we are not defined solely by the tasks we perform or the organizations we represent. Our work is an integral part of us, but it does not define our entire being.

With smart phones glued to our pockets, we find ourselves constantly connected and readily available for work-related matters. This constant connectivity makes it challenging to disassociate ourselves from our work. However, it's important to question whether this always-on mentality is sustainable or necessary. True fulfillment comes from striking a balance between our professional and personal lives, allowing us to thrive in all areas.

Building a whole life, not just a career, is the key to a fulfilling existence. It's about recognizing that our identity extends beyond our work and encompasses various facets of life. Personal growth, relationships, health, hobbies, and leisure all contribute to our holistic well-being. By nurturing these aspects, we create a more balanced and meaningful existence.

From a young age, we are conditioned to tie our core identity to a profession. The question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" becomes ingrained in our minds, shaping our perception of ourselves. However, it's important to challenge this notion and understand that our identity goes beyond the realms of our chosen occupation. Our true essence is a culmination of our passions, values, experiences, and relationships.

The problem with having our identity tied solely to our job is that it's not fully within our control. External circumstances and setbacks in our professional lives can deeply impact our mental health and overall well-being. By acknowledging that our happiness should not be solely dependent on our work, we regain power over our own lives and preserve our mental and emotional resilience.

It's time to break free from the confines of work-centric identity. A profession is not a personality, but merely one element of who we are. Let's embrace our multi-dimensional selves, celebrating the passions, values, and relationships that make us unique. By doing so, we not only attract attention to our LinkedIn profiles but also inspire others to seek a more balanced and fulfilling life beyond their professional titles.

A late-night reflection from a person who has entered her 30s in life :)
