Unveiling the Journey of a Siemens Apprentice: Chichi's Inspiring Story
At Siemens, we believe that the heart of innovation lies in diversity. Our commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace is embodied by individuals like Chichi, who have embarked on a remarkable journey as an Electrical Applications Engineering Apprentice within Siemens EA GB&I.
In her second year of the Electrical Applications Engineering Apprenticeship, Chichi is making her mark in the Distribution Systems sector as a switchgear designer within ENG6. Her responsibilities encompass a range of critical tasks, including the design of electrical protection schematics, ordering high and low-voltage protection devices like transformers and relays, and conducting electrical/mechanical function testing post-manufacture.

Chichi's journey into engineering began with a fascination for the creative aspect of design—an element she hadn't initially associated with the field. This newfound perspective ignited her curiosity, prompting her to explore the diverse career opportunities within engineering during high school. Shadowing various engineering roles helped her identify her strengths and interests. The apprenticeship route appealed to her as it allowed her to learn in a working environment, gain specific knowledge for her role, and build confidence in her abilities. The structured learning environment, coupled with flexible working hours, provided the ideal platform for Chichi to develop her skills and knowledge.

Chichi recognizes the significance of her role as a vital part of the Electrification and Automation business. Engineering functions are at the core of EA GB & I, creating innovative design solutions that drive profitable growth. Chichi takes pride in being part of this integral function, contributing to the company's success.

Chichi's current projects span a diverse range of switchgear products and switchboard sizes. These projects involve collaborations with prominent Distribution Network Operators such as Western Power Distribution, UK Power Networks, and Scottish Power. The varying specifications and preferences of these operators influence engineering designs, allowing Chichi to gain invaluable insights into Siemens' product range, from NXPLUS to 8DJH36.
For Chichi, the journey of discovery defines her role. As an engineering apprentice, she experiences numerous "light bulb" moments that keep her motivated. Starting the apprenticeship with limited knowledge of switchgear, she finds immense satisfaction in learning from mentors and applying engineering principles from past projects. Working within a team of experienced engineers who readily share their knowledge and having a supportive mentor have been game-changers in her career journey.

Chichi's journey is an inspiration for females aspiring to pursue engineering careers at Siemens or elsewhere. Chichi says: I always think “I don’t know what I don’t know”. This isn’t to say I’ll never learn but to have a realistic view that everyone starts somewhere and has to learn something to reach a level of competence. Just because you don’t know something, it doesn’t mean you can’t come to know it. Everyone has to go through the learning process, and I’m really enjoying the fact that that is what an apprenticeship is all about.
In conclusion, Chichi's story exemplifies Siemens' commitment to diversity, inclusion, and nurturing talent. Her journey from curiosity to competence is a testament to the limitless potential that awaits those who dare to explore engineering. We invite more individuals like Chichi to join us on this exciting path of innovation and growth at Siemens. Together, we can shape the future of technology and engineering, one remarkable journey at a time.
