Unveiling the Introvert's Guide to Networking: My Personal Revelation

Unveiling the Introvert's Guide to Networking: My Personal Revelation

I'll let you in on a little secret—I used to dread networking events as much as a cat dreads water.

The mere thought of small talk and elevator pitches was enough to send me scurrying back home or to any space I consider my safe haven of solitude.

Yet, here I am, about to unravel the beauty and strategy of networking from an introvert's perspective.

It's a journey of transformation, from wary observer to willing participant, and it's one I'm eager to share with you.

A - Authentic Encounters

It all clicked for me during an unexpected encounter at a local business event. Surrounded by the buzz of eager networkers, I found solace in a quiet corner, nursing my drink like a lifeline.

That's when it happened—a conversation, natural and unforced, about our shared interest in books. There were no pretenses, just two people sharing a moment of genuine connection.

This exchange evolved into a collaborative partnership that's still thriving years later.

It dawned on me that networking, for an introvert, isn't about making yourself heard amid the noise - it's about finding your wavelength in the silence. It's these authentic encounters that become the pillars of a strong network.

B - Beyond the Comfort Zone - Leveraging Our Listening Skills

Embracing the discomfort of networking taught me an invaluable lesson: our introverted tendency to listen and process can be our greatest networking asset.

We have the innate ability to forge deeper connections because we're naturally inclined to listen first and speak second.

I realized that by reframing networking as an opportunity to learn from others, I found myself drawn into more meaningful dialogues.

At my next networking event, instead of rehearsing a self-promotion script, I asked questions. The responses I received were not only enlightening but also often led to opportunities I'd never have found within the confines of my comfort zone.

C - Cultivating Community

But the true transformation in my networking approach came when I shifted my focus from quantity to quality—from collecting contacts to cultivating a community.

I started to view each interaction as a seed that could grow into a mutually supportive relationship. Instead of handing out my business card like a free sample, I began to seek out like-minded individuals with whom I could share a journey.

I started small, reaching out to a handful of people online who shared my interests. Together, we've built a small group that has become a bedrock for personal and professional growth. It's not just about advancing in our careers or businesses; it's about fostering a supportive network where we all thrive. This is networking with purpose, and it's a game-changer.

It didn't take long and I started organizing meetups and small events to pave the way for others to experience the beauty of networking. I remember pre-pandemic when I had the opportunity to organize the first-ever LinkedIn Local in Subic. An instant community was formed. And while it was a mix of entrepreneurs, freelancers, and office workers, they found a way to give value to each other, and it was just amazing.

If you've ever felt like networking was a party you weren't invited to, let me extend a personal invitation. As introverts, we have unique strengths that can make us networking naturals in our own right.

So, let’s turn the page together and start networking in a way that feels true to who we are.

Warm regards,

Jennette

P.S.: To all the introverts out there who are still on the fence about networking—let's start a conversation. You never know where a simple "hello" might lead.
