Unveiling the Hidden Costs of Healthcare

I just finished Dr. Marty Makary's eye-opening book, The Price We Pay: What Broke American Health Care - and How to Fix It. Dr. Makary, a surgeon and professor at Johns Hopkins University, delves deep into the issues plaguing our healthcare system. His revelations about the exorbitant costs and predatory financial practices in healthcare are both alarming and crucial to understand.

Dr. Makary points out a stark reality: Americans are losing trust in their doctors. The root cause? The overwhelming and unpredictable costs of medical care.

The Human Cost of Medical Debt (?? Welcome to the Game ??)

In one of the book’s chapters titled "Welcome to the Game," Makary describes the notorious inflation of hospital prices. Different hospitals charge vastly different prices for the same operation without any correlation to quality.

Researchers from the University of Iowa found that prices for the same type of heart bypass operation varied from $44,000 to $448,000 among 101 U.S. hospitals. Shockingly, there's no correlation between the surgery prices and patient outcomes, a fact true for other major procedures as well.

Hospitals' aggressive financial tactics, such as suing patients for unpaid bills and issuing surprise bills worth tens of thousands of dollars, threaten the sanctity of the doctor-patient relationship. From a waitress in Carlsbad, New Mexico, who had her paycheck garnished for an emergency room visit years ago, to a mother of four whose wages were garnished for a hospital-acquired infection, Dr. Makary's firsthand accounts illustrate the human toll of medical debt. An investigation into the billing practices of Carlsbad Medical Center, part of a for-profit hospital chain, revealed that about one fifth of the town’s population had been sued by the hospital, with many having their wages garnished. Shockingly, 95% of all civil cases in the local courthouse were filed by this hospital.

The book also includes a heartbreaking study which shows that half of U.S. patients with metastatic breast cancer have been pursued by collection agencies for medical bills. As a cancer surgeon, Dr. Makary finds this deeply troubling, questioning what has become of the noble profession of cancer care when patients face financial ruin on top of their illness.

?? A Broken System and A Call to Action ??

This isn't free market competition - it's a monopoly. Hospitals inflate bills to generate more revenue, knowing insurance companies will only pay part of the sticker price. In turn, insurers demand bigger discounts, ultimately passing higher costs onto the public through increased premiums.

Dr. Makary opposes "Medicare For All" as the sole solution to the healthcare cost crisis. Instead, he advocates for transparency and true free market competition to bring prices down. His book, written in plain English, avoids medical jargon, making it accessible to both the average citizen and medical professionals.

"The Price We Pay" presents a unique perspective on the financial games hospitals and insurance companies play. It’s one of the best books that I've read on America’s dysfunctional healthcare system and a must-read for anyone passionate about creating a more equitable and effective healthcare system.

Thank you

Such a good read

I read it recently and couldn't put it down. I learned so much and was infuriated to learn how much I had been ripped off during my career, as each year my raise was eaten up by health insurance premium increases. I could have purchased a home with the money United Healthcare took from me over the years! The financial toxicity that I continue to experience having a genetic chronic condition is like living in a nightmare. I highly recommend this book!
