The Azure AI Agent Service offers several key features: it enables smooth coordination and deployment of AI agents across business processes, provides flexible scaling capabilities to match changing demands while maintaining performance, and ensures data security through features like bring your own storage (BYOS) and private networking.

These capabilities streamline the agent development lifecycle, freeing organizations to focus on innovation while the platform handles deployment and scaling complexities.

Azure AI Search

The updates to Azure AI Search address a longstanding challenge in search systems- delivering highly relevant, precise results while maintaining low latency.

Traditional search approaches face two major limitations:

  1. Limited Recall in Term-Based Indexes: Standard search engines depend heavily on term matching, which often misses relevant results when queries use different phrasing or terminology. This particularly affects complex or ambiguous queries, leaving users with incomplete or irrelevant information.
  2. Suboptimal Ranking and Latency: Search engines struggle to effectively rank their results, making it difficult to surface the most relevant items first. Traditional ranking models also introduce unwanted delays, disappointing users who need instant responses.

Azure AI Search has introduced two significant enhancements: Generative Query Rewriting (QR) and a new semantic ranker (SR). These innovations improve both search relevance and performance, setting new benchmarks in the industry.

  • Generative Query Rewriting (QR): QR uses a fine-tuned Small Language Model (SLM) to generate up to 10 alternative query formulations while maintaining low latency. This approach significantly improves recall in term-based indexes. Users see a measurable improvement in search relevance, with a 4-point increase in NDCG@3 metrics. Best of all, QR comes at no extra cost with semantic ranker queries.
  • New Semantic Ranker (SR): The enhanced SR uses a cross-encoder model to rerank the top 50 search results, dramatically improving relevance and performance. Testing across 90+ datasets in 19 languages shows up to 22-point improvements in NDCG@3 when combined with QR. The new SR delivers responses up to 2.3 times faster than before. Updated models for answers, captions, and highlights provide more accurate, contextual information.

These improvements deliver more precise and efficient search results for customers, boosting user satisfaction and productivity. The powerful combination of QR and SR ensures swift access to relevant information, making Azure AI Search more effective at meeting diverse search needs.

Azure Open AI

Last but not least, we announced the general availability of fine-tuning capabilities for Azure OpenAI models within the Azure AI Foundry portal.

These updates tackle key challenges in AI model deployment and customization—particularly the complexity of fine-tuning large language models. Through distillation, where a large teacher model trains a smaller student model, Azure now enables the creation of efficient models that maintain performance while reducing costs and latency. This approach proves especially valuable for applications in resource-constrained environments.

This advancement lets customers customize models like GPT-4, GPT-4o, and GPT-4o mini, directly within Azure AI Foundry, providing a seamless experience for managing and deploying fine-tuned models. Azure OpenAI Service now also supports vision fine-tuning, enabling developers to fine-tune models using both text and image data. This capability, available for GPT-4o models, maintains the same cost structure as text-only fine-tuning. Vision fine-tuning enhances applications that combine visual and textual information, delivering more comprehensive and context-aware results. The feature includes continuous (snapshot) fine-tuning and structured outputs, improving the model's handling of complex, multimodal data.

The updates also boost scalability and flexibility through Provisioned and Global Standard deployments. Developers can now choose between regional or global configurations: Provisioned deployments deliver dedicated resources for consistent performance, while global standard deployments ensure high availability and low latency across multiple regions. These improvements streamline deployment and enable efficient scaling to match varying demands.

The enhanced integration delivers improved reliability and performance compared to previous versions, helping organizations create precise, tailored AI models.

A key innovation is the distillation process, which uses a large, general-purpose teacher model to train a smaller, specialized student model. This technique cuts costs, reduces latency, and improves performance—especially in resource-limited environments.

The process follows three steps:

  1. Data Generation: The teacher model (such as GPT-4o) processes vast information to generate training data, creating labels for the student model.
  2. Training: The student model (like GPT-4o-mini) fine-tunes itself on the teacher-generated data, learning to match the teacher's capabilities more efficiently.
  3. Evaluation: Standardized metrics assess the student model's performance, ensuring it matches the teacher model's capabilities while maintaining accuracy.

The upcoming preview of Provisioned and Global Standard deployments for fine-tuning adds flexibility and scalability for enterprise applications. Organizations can choose between regional or global configurations based on their needs. Provisioned deployments offer dedicated resources for steady performance, while global standard deployments ensure consistent service across regions with high availability and low latency.

These improvements to Azure OpenAI fine-tuning capabilities help organizations build and deploy custom AI models more efficiently, optimizing both performance and scalability for their specific needs.

This top three list is just the tip of the iceberg. For more updates from Ignite and deep dive, please refer Microsoft Ignite 2024 Book of News.
