A normal transparent gateway, also known as a traditional gateway or a data-forwarding gateway, acts as a bridge between IoT devices and the cloud or central server. It receives data from sensors or machines and forwards it to the cloud for further processing, storage, and analysis. The normal transparent gateway primarily focuses on data forwarding and connectivity, ensuring that the data from IoT devices reaches the intended destination.
Whereas, An edge gateway is an advanced gateway that extends beyond basic data forwarding capabilities. It is designed to bring intelligence and processing capabilities closer to the edge of the network, closer to the IoT sensors or machines. The edge gateway plays a crucial role in edge computing, enabling real-time analytics, local data processing, and decision-making at the edge of the network. It not only forwards data, but also performs data filtering, aggregation, and analysis locally, minimizing the need to transmit all data to the cloud. This helps in reducing latency, optimizing bandwidth usage, and improving overall system responsiveness.
In applications, where you wish the data to be processed locally, Edge Gateway is preferred such as Industrial Automation, Traffic Management, Surveillance etc. In these scenarios, the system collects sensor data and performs local data processing to reduce the volume of data getting transmitted over the network and enable faster decision-making at the edge. Whereas in applications such as Home Automation, Energy Meter or Flow Meter reading for billing purposes the data volume is very less and the objective is to capture the minimum information required. In order to implement IoT in a cost-effective way, a simple transparent gateway is selected.?
