Unveiling the Art of Authentic Networking: A Personal Journey
This is pretty much what I looked like…
The first time I walked into a room of complete strangers to network and was completely freaked out. By the way, I was 52 years old and decided to throw myself directly into the fire by attending a big event alone and being seated at a table where I didn’t know anyone. WOW, was I uncomfortable. I barely made it through the evening and don’t think I said very much to anyone. I was stressed out to the MAX!?
Speed the clock up to today. I have grown to love networking (well, that depends, sometimes). However, what i know to be true is networking is a powerful tool to meet extraordinary people and to grow both personally and professionally.
Here are a few tips I’ve learned over the years while painstakingly learning to embrace and fall in love with the art of networking.?
Find Common Ground: One of the most valuable lessons I've learned on my networking journey is the power of finding something in common. Whether it's a mutual hobby, or a similar career path, commonalities create an instant connection. Even something as simple as going to the same college or growing up in the same town instantly builds a bond. These shared experiences break down barriers and pave the way for meaningful conversations.?
Personalized Icebreakers: I've found that personalized icebreakers are key to making a lasting impression. During a recent networking event, I introduced myself with a playful twist: "Hi, I'm [Your Name]. I'm on a mission to make networking feel less like 'work' and more like 'connecting'." This lighthearted approach not only brought smiles but also encouraged others to open up about their networking experiences.
Trust Through Mutual Connections: Building trust is essential in networking. I often use LinkedIn to identify mutual connections before attending an event. Mentioning these shared contacts during conversations helps establish trust and credibility. It's amazing how knowing someone in common can foster a sense of camaraderie.
Adding Personal Value: Networking isn't about what you can get; it's about what you can give if you want to stand out. I've made it a practice to carry resources like a copy of one of my books, meaningful articles, or a list of podcast hosts looking for guests. It feels great to come from a place of service vs focusing on what I want from the other person. Sharing something of value during conversations leaves a favorable, lasting impression.
Tailored Pitch: Your introduction should be flexible to suit the context. I've found that adapting my message to align with the specific event or group I'm engaging with can make a world of difference. It shows that you've done your homework and are genuinely interested in the people you're connecting with.
Personal Reflection: Networking is a journey of personal growth. Over time, I've come to realize that it's not just about collecting business cards or expanding your contact list. It's about forming authentic connections with individuals who share your passions, goals, or experiences. Each connection I make brings a new perspective, a fresh idea, or an opportunity for collaboration.
In my own journey, networking has played a valuable role in my professional development and personal enrichment. It has opened doors I never knew existed. I met my very best friend from networking and we refer clients to each other all of the time. The relationships I've built through networking have become pillars of community, connections and numerous collaborations.?
