Unveiling the Allure: Exploring Namak Mandi, Peshawar's Gems Market [Part-1]

I had always been an avid collector of gemstones and rocks, as I travelled across the world on various assignments. With my limited collection of rareties, I had never delved into the world of gems much like Jeffery Bergman, SGC SSEF, Accredited Senior Gemologist, AGA , as he narrates in his article .

Inspired by Jeffery's travel log, and being a resident in Pakistan, I decided to explore my country a little more passionately, in search of hidden treasures within its gems markets and mining industry. To start off this exploratory journey, I decided to visit the renowned gemstone hub, "Namak Mandi" in Peshawar, where old traditions of lapidary craftsmanship still thrive. On my way to Namak Mandi, I browsed through an interesting article published by GIA on the bustling gem market.

Introduction

Nestled within the vibrant streets of Peshawar, Pakistan, lies a gem lover's paradise: Namak Mandi. This bustling marketplace is renowned for its centuries-old tradition of lapidary work, where artisans skillfully transform raw gemstones into exquisite pieces of jewelry. I travelled to Namak Mandi with my son Musa Khan and a dear friend Mohib Ullah.

Our first stop was at the doorstep of Ustad (Teacher) Zakir, whose lapidary work was truly awe-inspiring. His crafted pieces were a testament to his exceptional skill and unwavering dedication to his craft.

With meticulous precision and an artistic eye, Ustad Zakir transformed rough stones into breathtaking masterpieces. Each piece he created was a symphony of colors and textures, meticulously handcrafted to perfection. His ability to understand the inherent beauty within each stone and bring it to life was nothing short of remarkable.

As Ustad Zakir was whirling his magic in final polishing of a stone, we chatted with Amanullah (Son of Zakir Ustad) who was learning the craftsmanship

Ustad Zakir's attention to detail was evident in every facet and curve. The way he coaxed the stone to reveal its inner brilliance was a true marvel, resulting in a final product that captivated and enchanted all who beheld it. The artisan's lapidary work was an embodiment of both craftsmanship and artistry, leaving a lasting impression and reminding us of the boundless beauty that nature held within its precious stones.

A Heritage of Lapidary Artistry

Inquisitive about how Ustad Zakir acquired his skill, he said he learned the craftsmanship from his uncle Abdul Aziz. We requested if we could meet Ustad Abdul Aziz, in reponse to which he led us to his den and we were lucky to find him there along with his son Mr. Abdul Basit.

Ustad Abdul Aziz delving into the history of Lapidary at Namak Mandi and its evolution in recent decades

According to Ustad Abdul Aziz, Namak Mandi's legacy as a hub of lapidary work can be traced back to the skilled artisans who gained their craftsmanship from Jaipur, India, bringing with them a wealth of knowledge and expertise. Jaipur, known as the Pink City, has long been recognized as a center of gemstone cutting and polishing in the Indian subcontinent. The artisans who settled in Namak Mandi established a new chapter in the lapidary trade, blending their traditional techniques with the rich gemstone resources of the region.
