Unveiling the Above Average Coast-to-Coast Post Workflow Success of hit series 'Average Joe' - now streaming!

"Average Joe," a dark comedy-drama that is anything but average, and I'm thrilled to say that our 3-in-1 vendor pipeline encompassing dailies and sound mix in Atlanta, color-finish in LA, then back to online and mastering in Atlanta, proved to be a wonderfully collaborative experience supported by an extraordinary team built long before we saw the first frames of this project.

The Cast: A Harmony of Talent

But first, credit where credit is due. The BET+ series is loaded with a stellar cast that brings a unique blend of depth, humor, and complexity to the screen. Deon Cole, in the titular role as Joe, is the anchor of the show. Watching him navigate the insanity of his situation and grow in grit is supremely satisfying. Cynthia McWilliams, as Cathy, plays a character whose choices you'll love to hate, as she fulfills a fascinating character arc. Michael Trucco, as "Touch," embodies the troubled soul yearning for redemption. And Malcom Barrett's “Leon” is pure comedic gold.

With standout performances and a great story, the cast chemistry and choices set the series apart.

The Creative Team: Visionaries at Work

In post finishing, we had the honor of collaborating with showrunner Robb Cullen. Robb, along with his remarkable pantheon of writers and directors, crafted a show that was as enjoyable to collaborate on as it is to watch. The love and excitement for the project permeated every stage of production from the top. No one loves this show more than him, and that energy fostered an environment of collaboration and creativity.

Cinematographer Scott Peck and his standout team deserve a special mention. Their exceptional onset work and Scott’s continued dedication and direction through color-finishing, provided the editorial and post-finishing teams with quality materials that truly enhanced the storytelling process.

The Post Team: All about the Details

Post Producer Joe DeOliveira, our post-production maestro, handled all things post with the precision and expertise of a seasoned veteran. His meticulous attention to detail and ability to navigate the rigorous schedule ensured that all producers and creatives were heard, while facilitating the creation of the best show possible.

Supported by Post Supervisor Justin Lancaster and post pup Ripley, they were boots/paws on the ground in Atlanta and instrumental during the cutting room and post-finishing phases. Having the duo at our facility for several months was crucial to the experience, and we now feel like we've gained an honorary shiner with roommate privileges. We miss you, Ripley and Justin!

A special shoutout to Robbie Stern, a post coordinator with the skills of a superhero and the attitude of a saint. His contributions were invaluable and kept the wheels moving. Together, the show was in good hands with these 3 post warriors. And of course it goes without saying, that the editorial team of east and west coasters delivered on the promise of an absolutely fun dark comedy drama.

Post Vendors: 3-In-One Seamless Collaboration

Moonshine Post Production, ArsenalFX Color, and BOOM Post Audio, our post vendors, worked in perfect harmony. Strategically aligned, these three shops acted as a seamless one-stop shop, facilitating collaboration between both coasts.

With dailies and sound mix in Atlanta, color-finish in LA, and online in Atlanta, our united tech infrastructure and dedicated in-house producing teams pave the way to greater accessibility to the episodes for all stakeholders near or far.

On the west coast, at Santa Monica’s ArsenalFX Color, Tahirah Foy performed outstanding final color for the series, supported by Arsenal-led supervising producer Elspeth Grabner. Building the look of this inaugural season was a hand-in-hand process as the color team dug deep to pull the show's unique look to the surface.

East coast Sound Re-Recording Mixers Chris Basta and Rob Morgan worked tirelessly bringing pictures to life on the brand new mix stages at BOOM Post Audio. While Moonshine’s online team packed it all together for mastering a solid linear and streaming delivery. Of course behind every artist is a strong-shouldered in-house producer, but in this case, he was keeping the whole vendor chain and experience together without breaking a sweat, Caleb Wood.

This hybrid remote and in-person setting allowed every piece of the pipeline to be auditioned and worked on, proving once again the rock-solid efficiency of our approach.?
