The Unveiled SEO Strategy Behind Jasper.ai's Traffic Surge

Welcome to another edition of the 'Growth Through Content' newsletter.

This time, we're turning the spotlight onto Jasper.ai , a pioneer in AI-driven content creation and a platform I've had the pleasure of using firsthand.

You'll learn:

  • How a well-thought-out content strategy can put you on the map, even in a competitive niche.
  • Why targeting individuals searching for quick solutions can lead to product discovery.
  • The significance of 'good enough' content and its implications for ranking and traffic.

Let's dive in.

What is Jasper.ai?

Jasper.ai , one of the early birds in the AI content creation arena, garnered attention right from its inception. Offering users the ability to craft content with AI's assistance, this platform has become synonymous with convenience. Its widespread chatter early on resulted from its innovative approach, which gave it a heap of authority.

It created a lot of noise in marketing. And it got a lot of links.

What are Their SEO Metrics Like?

Ahrefs offers a revealing snapshot into Jasper's robust online footprint:

  • Domain and URL Ratings: With a DR of 83 and a UR of 49, they're clearly a formidable online presence.
  • Backlinks: They boast 443K backlinks from 18.4K referring domains. That's not just a strong backlink profile; it's a fortress.
  • Organic Search Traffic: With a monthly traffic of 367K, the value of which would be around $345K if acquired via PPC, it's evident that their content strategy is paying off.

So, what's the secret sauce behind these impressive figures?

Why Content is Jasper's Knight in Shining Armor

From my time in SEO, I've realised that it's often the simplest strategies that are the most effective.

Jasper.ai exemplifies this. Their approach is straightforward: churn out vast volumes of content that targets a spectrum of search intents.

Spotlight on 'Shortcuts'

They've cleverly targeted individuals looking for swift solutions, such as templates, examples and AI generators.

This strategy seamlessly brings users from informational searches to potential product discovery.

Remember the time you searched for "YouTube title examples"? Jasper likely had a tailored article waiting for you.

This is quite smart. The whole marketing plug around generative ai is that it makes life easier.

People looking for examples, templates and ai generators are looking to make life easy for themselves. And by showing up, Jasper has a chance to introduce themselves.

And show up, they do.

With over 400 pages of content, they are meeting a lot of new people every month.

But what's the content like?

Discovery through Content

Here's the deal.

Each Jasper article isn't just information; it's an advert in disguise.

By serving content that solves user queries, they've turned each piece into a traffic magnet, making user discovery a breeze.

Take this article with video script templates.

It naturally talks about Jasper in the content:

This is clever.

Now, multiply this by 400, and you see the power this could have.

But if I'm honest, the content is just...ok.

The 'Good Enough' Content Conundrum (the issue with ai)

Now, while I'd say their content quality is decent, it's not earth-shattering. But here's the twist – it ranks.

Take the post we just talked about.

It ranks number 1 for a lot of keywords.

And generates decent traffic.

And in the grand scheme of things, that's what truly matters.

We've been conditioned to aim for perfection, but in the SEO game, 'good enough' often gets the job done.

However, it's clear that these posts were written by humans and machines combined.

The nature of them, the images they've added. You can tell there has been some human interaction and research.

If I'm honest, based on my experience with Jasper and other tools, I'm not sure it was used massively in creating all that content.

And so, it raises a question.

Why aren't the ai content tools using their own tools to dominate?

The easy answer is that they can't.

Which is actually quite encouraging.

Because the tools themselves acknowledge that they need humans in the process.

So, it begs another question.

Should you use ai tools?

AI Content: Yes or No?

I'll go ahead and answer this for you.

Yes. Use the tools, but as we're seeing, you need to add humans into the equation.

Image creation, fact-checking, adding unique data.

You need to plan and, indeed, budget for this, but using these tools can save you incredible amounts of time and money.

And I suspect Jaspers team did that too. They will have created titles, metas, outlines and, indeed, some of the content.

But I'm also betting humans were used heavily too.

And that's my view, you can save huge amounts of time, but don't think it eradicates humans just yet.

What You Can Learn from Jasper?

I think the core thing I've taken away from this study is that having a logical strategy for your SEO matters, and your content needs to support this.

Good enough content is fine. Just get it published because 50 good enough articles are better than 5 jaw-droppers.

You can always make them better at a later date.

And that you can use ai content tools to support your growth, but you'll need humans too.

Well said Andrew a lot of interesting and accurate takes in here. Jasper create content which “seamlessly brings users from informational searches to potential product discovery.” This focus shows a true understanding of user search intent and it’s why Jasper have done so well. They have thousands of awesome backlinks which helps to supplement their “good enough” content to rank. Thanks again!
