While the EV adoption rate is relatively high in Europe, North America and China, other regions like Southeast Asia have been lagging in the transition towards e-mobility. However, recently within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), there has been an increase in charging infrastructure investments, purchase incentives for EVs, and model availability. Looming EV potential in ASEAN countries is in desperate need for matching charging infrastructure to foster the growth.
Inadequate Fast Charging Infrastructure ??
As of 2023 year end, there’re a total of 132,000 battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in Thailand, but only 4,533 DC outlets were installed for EV charging, with a vehicle-to-pile ratio of 30:1. Among all charging outlets, the DC outlets accounts for less than 50%. The Vietnam government has set ambitious target of 1 million car sales by 2030 and aims for EVs to account for 10% of all new vehicles. By September 2024, Vinfast has operated around 3,000 charging stations and 150,000 charging portals dedicated exclusively for Vinfast cars. In October 2024, the ministry of investment, trade and industry (MITI) reiterated its target to get 10,000 EV chargers in place in Malaysia by 2025, including 1,500 DC fast chargers and 8,500 AC slow chargers respectively, but just 956 DC units were put into operation as per 31 October 2024.??
The scarcity of rapid charging stations stands as a major obstacle to EV adoption in these regions. According to most local EV drivers, range anxiety is constantly stopping them from long EV trips due to frequent long queues for charging on highways during holidays. Even with current fast charging facilities, it takes as long as 40-60 minutes for a full charge averagely. The fact is, however, almost every charging station is bustling with waiting electric cars most of the day.
Noise Pollution
From the user side, noise pollution arrives as a common hassle when charging at public sites. During previous visit to some major charging sites in Vietnam, we found that the noise level unexceptionally reached 75dB (tested 1M away from the charging stations), giving frustrating charging experience in waiting period.
Other user unfriendly feedbacks are also prevalent from our site visit trip. For instance, the lack of cable management left long charging cables on the ground that can easily get rolled over and damaged by passing vehicles; the system air outlet positioned right to the charging cable at one side and the rising temperature has accelerated the aging of charging cables; some charging stations even stopped service for maintenance in daytime busy hours.
To address those charging problems in ASEAN countries, today we’re thrilled to launch the most anticipated IDS120K3, the 120kW DC fast flagship EV charger. It’s a perfect combination of everything, adopting Infypower’s second-generation 30kW module platform (REG1K0100G2). It’s built with IP55 water and dust resistance, making it suitable for various harsh environments.

As it is known, the charging system noise is mostly decided by the design of its air duct and cooling system. For air cooled chargers, most noise comes from the operating of cooling fans. The higher fan rotation speed is; the more noise is produced in charging. So, it needs to balance noise control with heat dissipation effectively. IDS120K3 is nothing like other charging stations in noise control. It utilizes innovative noise suppression technology with Infypower patented U-shaped air duct design. The air inlet of the system is designed at the left lower rear door and air outlet at the left upper rear door. Through specialized labyrinth air duct design, it incorporates only two AC centrifugal fans for heat dissipation. Even when the cooling fans operate at full speed, the system noise level can be kept within 60dB while always ensuring sufficient cooling for the charging system.
In addition, to flexibly adapt to different charging demand for optimal efficiency and utilization, with CoolRing? technology, IDS120K3 supports real-time dynamic power sharing among up to three IDS120K3s in a loop and allows for maximum 240kW/360kW output or average 60kW output on a single charging connector, making it more "powerful" than average charging stations with much reduced charging times. Also, it enables patented simultaneous dual DC charging for the same electric truck, significantly shortening charging time for specialized electric cars. Meanwhile, the power granularity with dynamic power sharing is 30kW between two DC outputs of an IDS120K3, enabling versatile outputs acccomodating different types of electric vehicles in market, including 0kW/30kW/60kW/90kW/120kW. This oustanding power allocation strategy follows a single module's power pattern instead of being roughly divided by the number of charging cables.
Moreover, IDS120K3 has a small footprint covering only 0.3 square meters, minimizing space occupation for compact parking spots. It also enables pre-installed transportation with modules inside the cabinet to streamline installation and deployment for start-up CPOs. Besides, it offers spring-assisted cable retractor option, preventing its charging cables from getting damaged by passing vehicles when dragging on the ground and assisting effortless charging experience.? ?
With IDS120K3 now ready for ASEAN market, we aim to help strengthen the overall EV fast charging ecosystem together with local CPOs in these regions.?
