Unusual projects - throwing blood

Some of the projects we do are... well, unusual. As an AV and Interactives company with a team that just loves to provid"added skills" I guess that's par for the course.

On this one, we were asked to come up with three mechanisms for the Sherlock Holmes traveling exhibition as part of a crime lab type of effort. What would cause different types of blood spatter evidence left at a crime scene. Of course the theming had to be Victorian with a touch of steam punk.
Here's the result we created for 'Arterial' - that is the blood spatter pattern left if someone had a cut artery. We started with a hand wheel as the motion we're trying to create for this is rotary, and then created a really nice reciprocal mechanism that we'd come across somewhere earlier to convert circular motion to the linear motion required for the effect. We then pulsed a pump to create a nice pattern using a found syringe that looks scary enough in its own right.
