She is far more trouble

Than you can imagine

And often brings danger

crashing through our door.

To quell her created chaos

I reach inside myself

Searching ever deeper

Till I discover more

And in saving our lives

I begin to wonder,

“Does she know?”

Still I hear her laughter

From such grand irony

For her child told her “No!”

While talking on the phone,

She feels my weary plight

To aid her in her struggles.

She and I laugh together

And I feel not so alone.

Then once again

I begin to wonder

“Does she know?”

Returning home in darkness,

Her body and soul exhausted,

I see addiction is still guiding

Her on a chosen path of pain.

So she speaks lies of comfort.

And other falsehoods like

“Don’t worry, I’m a big girl”

In hopes to keep me sane.

How can I not again

Begin to wonder

“Does she know?”

Does she know

How much I care

Or that I truly

Feel great love

That any time

Spent with her

Is a gracious gift

From high above?
