Until Justice Is Served
I watched the movie "Just Mercy" over the weekend and it ignited something in me that I lost long ago. It's the longing and yearning for justice for all. If you have not watched the movie nor read the book about attorney Bryan Stevenson and his initiative called "Equal Justice Initiative" please take the time to do so. It does not only exposed the United States Criminal Justice system but it shines a light to a much larger issue. It is not just about race inequality as this has been a battle if not war for centuries now. It is about human rights.
I was in elementary school and it was "career day", one of the parents that decided to share what they did for a living was a mother and an attorney. The thought of a woman being able to change not only the household but also help others as a career really intrigued me. Later on, in college I took a human rights course and that confirmed my love for law. Although I halted at being a legal business consultant and paralegal for many reasons I always feel the joy at the "end" of a case when it goes the way or better than the client expected. The thought of helping others in need when they feel defenseless or when they feel the judicial system has let them down is the entire reason why I decided to get into law and become a legal professional. I now get to train and enhance other legal professionals while still taking opportunities to help those with legal needs.
This article is not to promote a movie or book. It is to bring awareness to a much larger issue. We as humans have rights taken away way to many times. Often times without realizing it. We need to stand up and lend not only our voices but follow through with action. Reach out to your local legislatures and not ask but demand change. Protesting and petitions are always effective. However, getting the attention of elected officials will move mountains.
It is time to stop complaining and posting. It is time to start taking action and making a real change. Until justice is served we will always be here to fight the good fight! Justice for all.
