The Unsung Heroes: Why Night Staff in Homeless Hostels Need Stronger Police Cooperation

Homeless shelters provide a crucial lifeline for vulnerable individuals, offering a safe haven from the streets. But for the night support staff and concierges who hold the fort when darkness falls, the reality can be far from peaceful. They often face a challenging environment, including incidents of physical violence from unauthorized visitors or even other residents.

The Importance of Reporting:

When these acts of violence occur, timely and accurate reporting is vital. This not only ensures victims receive justice and support, but also deters future incidents and improves the overall safety of the shelter. Night staff and concierges are often the first witnesses to these events, playing a critical role in gathering evidence and providing detailed statements.

Challenges to Cooperation:

Despite their crucial role, night staff often face barriers to effective police cooperation. These can include:

  • Lack of trust: Negative past experiences with law enforcement can make residents hesitant to report, which can extend to staff who fear repercussions for reporting on their behalf.
  • Fear of retaliation: Reporting concerns of violence can put staff at risk of further abuse or even threats from perpetrators.
  • Understaffing: With limited resources, staff might not have the time or support to properly engage with the police and provide comprehensive statements.
  • Lack of training: Training in de-escalation techniques, trauma-informed communication, and police liaison would significantly improve staff's ability to report incidents effectively.

Building Bridges:

Strengthening cooperation between night staff and the police requires a multi-pronged approach:

  • Building trust: Regular interactions and positive experiences can foster trust and encourage reporting. This could involve joint training sessions, community engagement initiatives, and dedicated liaison officers.
  • Confidentiality and safety: Guaranteeing anonymity and prioritizing staff safety through clear protocols and support systems is crucial.
  • Trauma-informed training: Equipping staff with skills to manage difficult situations, provide emotional support to victims, and communicate effectively with the police will enhance their ability to report incidents.
  • Resource allocation: Ensuring adequate staffing levels and providing dedicated time for police interaction will empower staff to fulfil their reporting responsibilities effectively.

The Bottom Line:

Night staff and concierges in homeless hostels are the cornerstones of safety and security for vulnerable residents. By recognizing their challenges and building stronger partnerships with the police, we can empower them to be even more effective in safeguarding those who rely on them most. This isn't just about individual cases; it's about creating a safer environment for everyone and ensuring that violence against any individual, regardless of their circumstances, is never tolerated.

A great article to convey the critical role of night staff, all too often overlooked. Ensuring night staff feel part of the support team is necessary (more than just written handovers), training is critical and a positive interactive relationship with the local police is the cherry on the cake.

This is for sure a growth opportunity across the sector. There’s lots of opportunity to strengthen the providers/police relationship!
