“My job is to provide stability, even when things are in flux,” explains Cynthia Drebot. As the Executive Director for the North End Women’s Centre, her position is needed now more than ever for the local women who utilize the services provided by this non-profit.
We hear so much about front-line workers of this current health crisis, yet we rarely think about the selfless individuals who provide stability for Winnipeg’s most vulnerable citizens. Even before COVID-19 hit, the Centre existed as a sanctuary for women in our city to come to take charge of their lives. The North End Women's Centre offers a wide variety of support services, including transitional housing, financial counselling, addictions support and family counselling.
Cynthia always knew she would work with people in some capacity. “I always had a passion for supporting people through difficult times.” Her compassionate nature and strong leadership skills are just a few reasons why she is the perfect individual to lead this essential organization. “I love being able to lead a team of 30 strong, kick-ass, fierce independent women who are supporting the community.” While the team is diverse in terms of skills and strengths, they all work together towards a common mission and vision. “If you come to us, we will support you in whatever way you need with zero judgement.”
While Cynthia loves her role, she is the first to admit that it does not come without its challenges. “In the non-profit world our biggest struggle is wondering if we will have enough to sustain doing the work that the community needs.” This is true at all times, but especially during the current health crisis. “We cannot close because we have a very vulnerable, yet resilient, population.”
In order to keep supporting the women who come to them for support, the North End Women’s Centre is actively accepting cash donations, as well as donations of food, hygiene and emergency products. If you are willing and able to support this incredible organization, please call 204-589-7347 or email [email protected] for more info.
Thank you Cynthia and the rest of the team at the North End Women's Centre for supporting our community in a huge way not only now, but always. Calling the Centre essential is truly an understatement.
