The Unstoppable Rise of Indian Startups: A Journey Through Data

Introduction:

Delving into the world of Indian startups, armed with data from Government of India's data portal (DPIIT) and extensive internet research, I uncovered a treasure trove of insights into the thriving entrepreneurship landscape across various states. As the number of recognized startups continues to soar, we witness a nation brimming with potential, talent, and a penchant for innovation.

The Startup Surge:

As per a report by the Economic Times, the Indian government recognized an astounding 84,102 entities as startups by November 2022, with this number still on the rise. This echoes the tremendous support offered not only by the central government but also various state governments, fostering a conducive environment for young entrepreneurs to flourish.

Since 2016 startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) there has been an increasing trend in startups and following chart gives an idea about the trend:

Source of Data:

The data used in this analysis was obtained from the Government of India's data portal, specifically related to startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). It offers a glimpse into the government's efforts in supporting and nurturing the Indian startup ecosystem.

I am not the owner of data, and I can't give permission to use it. The data has following attributes: S. No., Year, State, Industry, Count, Last Update

Since there are many industries, showing them all in the charts was not feasible and it is difficult to make good insight about trends that is why I have grouped industries and defined a group column (for industry group). Few charts use the groups instead of industries. Please refer to section "Group Industry mapping" section to check definition of groups.

The data available from government portal is about startups registered as part of startup India initiative by the government. There may be others who didn't register with government portal. As per portal: "The catalog contains information related to Startups recognized by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT). CSV file provided in the catalog contains the Number of startups recognized by DPIIT year, sector, and state wise"
