Unstoppable Now: Walking the Talk

True leadership stems from individuality that is honestly and sometimes imperfectly expressed. Leaders should strive for authenticity over perfection. – Sheryl Sandberg

What does it mean to “be a leader”?

Equating “leader” with a given title or position of power is a popular yet incorrect notion of leadership. A leader is not someone who tallies the most votes, wears a “C” on their jersey, or is promoted, thereby gaining a number of direct reports.?

In Unstoppable’s view: there are no leaders. That is to say, there is no fixed category of person who is a “leader.” Leadership is a way of being and acting that is available to anyone. Indeed, there are people being leaders — but not because their business card says so.?

We need leadership now more than ever. Old-school thinking about leadership would have us believe it’s about repeating behaviours and patterns modelled by others who are successful or who we admire. Spoiler alert: maintaining the status quo is not effective leadership — and it certainly isn’t what’s needed to tackle our global challenges. We need people capable of taking us from the known to the unknown, able to work toward novel solutions with no tangible evidence to back them up yet. Someone who “walks the talk,” has no cap on his or her ability to be authentic, has unlimited access to their entire humanity, and has the wherewithal to use whatever qualities are needed in any given situation — that is a leader.

What does it look like to exercise the muscles to be this kind of leader? That’s what Unstoppable is in the business of providing.
