Unspoken Expectations: The Power of Asking

All the Things You Don’t Say

Avoiding conflict is understandable, but silence is destroying your connections.

Through my work, I’ve identified three key communication barriers:

  1. Unverbalized Expectations
  2. Misunderstandings
  3. Assumptions

Today, let’s focus on unverbalized expectations, the unspoken needs that act as premeditated resentments. These silent expectations often lead to confusion, disappointment, and broken trust.

Unverbalized expectations are like asking someone to hit a target they don’t even know exists.

In professional settings, this could mean expecting your manager to recognize your efforts without speaking up or assuming your team knows your priorities without communicating them clearly.

The antidote? Ask.

When you clearly express your needs and expectations, you remove the guesswork and open the door to stronger collaboration, deeper trust, and better results.

Yes, asking can feel uncomfortable, especially if you’ve been conditioned to believe your needs don’t matter. But the discomfort is temporary—and the benefits last.
