Trauma takes many forms. Its impact on a woman's life will be profound if not properly addressed. Today I want to take you on an exploration of the main types of trauma that women experience and how these may influence your career and leadership roles.

1. Childhood Trauma

Childhood trauma includes experiences such as physical, emotional, psychological or sexual abuse, as well as neglect and exposure to domestic violence. These early experiences can leave deep psychological scars that affect self-esteem, trust, and the ability to form healthy relationships long into adulthood. In a professional context, unresolved childhood trauma manifests as difficulty asserting oneself, fear of authority figures, or an overdeveloped need to please others, potentially stifling leadership potential.

2. Sexual Trauma

Sexual trauma, including harassment, assault, and rape, has lasting effects on a woman’s sense of safety, self-worth, and agency. The impact of such trauma easily extends into the workplace, where a woman may struggle with feelings of shame, powerlessness, or hypervigilance. This will likely lead to challenges in leadership, such as difficulty in setting boundaries, reluctance to take on roles of authority, or an avoidance of situations that trigger memories of the trauma.

Many women who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) suffer from chronic stress, anxiety, and depression. The effects of IPV erode self-confidence and make it difficult to focus on career development or leadership roles. These women might fear conflict, have trouble making decisions, or feel isolated from supportive networks, all of which hinder professional growth and leadership effectiveness.

4. Workplace Trauma

Workplace trauma results from bullying, discrimination, harassment, or being in a toxic work environment. Women who endure such conditions usually develop a deep mistrust of colleagues or superiors, become excessively self-critical, or experience burnout. This type of trauma significantly impedes career advancement when the targeted person withdraws from leadership opportunities or struggles with confidence in her professional abilities.

5. Societal and Cultural Trauma

Societal and cultural traumas include the cumulative effects of systemic sexism, racism, and discrimination. Women, particularly women of color, LGBTQIA+ womxn, and women from other marginalized communities, face ongoing trauma related to their identity. These experiences result in internalized oppression, self-doubt, and a diminished sense of belonging in professional environments. Therefore, leadership roles may feel inaccessible or fraught with additional pressures due to these intersecting identities.

6. Loss and Grief

Trauma related to loss, such as the death of a loved one, miscarriage, or divorce, has significant emotional repercussions. Grief can be debilitating, affecting concentration, decision-making, and emotional resilience. In a professional setting, unresolved grief leads to decreased productivity, difficulty in leading teams, and a struggle to maintain balance in all areas of life.

7. Acute and Complex Trauma

Acute trauma refers to the intense psychological impact from a single, overwhelming event (or a series of such events), such as a violent attack, a serious accident, war and terrorism, or a natural disaster. Women with acute trauma experience immediate and severe symptoms like shock, intense fear, and intrusive memories. This type of trauma disrupts daily functioning and emotional stability, thus leading to difficulties in concentration, managing stress, and maintaining consistent performance in personal and professional settings.

Complex trauma refers to prolonged exposure to traumatic events, often of an interpersonal nature, such as ongoing abuse or chronic neglect. It sometimes manifests as Complex-PTSD. Women with complex trauma may struggle with emotional regulation, have a heightened startle response, and find it difficult to trust others. In leadership roles, this can translate into challenges in managing stress, building team cohesion, and maintaining consistent performance.

8. Vicarious Trauma

Vicarious trauma occurs where a woman is exposed to the traumatic experiences of others, often in caregiving or professional roles (e.g., healthcare workers, first responders, social workers, therapists, field researchers, war correspondents). This type of trauma most often leads to compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and a sense of helplessness, all of which can diminish one’s ability to lead effectively and maintain professional boundaries.

Brilliantly explained Dr. Cécile Van de Voorde. I especially love how you talk about traumas we don't often think about such as "Vicarious Trauma." In addition to that, for me personally, I healed SO much of my inter generational trauma - it has been an amazing way to free myself on every level, but especially in reversing my illnesses as they were created partially from that.
