Ever heard of someone going into a massage and coming out more stressed out than when they entered? That's what happened to me earlier this week.
I tried someone new and apparently, she was super green and instead of a deep tissue (to alleviate my tense muscles), I got the equivalent of an oil rub.
While lying there, I couldn't help but think about how disappointing the experience was. All the while, I also told myself to stop thinking negatively and try to find a positive in the experience. I came up short.
I couldn't help but think about the parallels between an experience such as this and burnout. Yes, this is a one-off sort of thing while burnout happens as a result of chronic stress, but the underlying mechanism is the same.
You go in with expectations and when they don't get met, all sorts of negative thoughts and feelings arise.
I felt so miserable that towards the end I wanted to walk out on my massage rather than continue to be subjected to it any longer. Many of my burnout clients feel the same at work. When misery rears her ugly head, they want to bail. And all the mindset management techniques in the world aren't enough to necessarily change what you're feeling.
That's why it's so important to tackle burnout from multiple angles.

You're?sitting at your desk, working hard on a project that's due in the next few days. You've been working on it non-stop for days now, and you're starting to feel burnt out.
So?when you walk into the break room, you see some of your colleagues chatting away and having a good time over coffee. They look like they're just having fun—laughing, telling jokes. But you know what? It makes you feel resentful!
What?happened? Why are they laughing while you're doing all the work? Why don't they understand how hard this is for me? Aren't they supposed to help me out here? What about my manager…shouldn't she be helping too? It feels like everyone is just letting me do all the work!
We've?all been there:?feeling unappreciated?for our hard work and wondering why other people seem to get all the credit for our efforts. And it sucks! When we feel like we aren't being given credit where credit is due—or even worse, when undeserving people get credit for our work—we can start feeling resentful toward them and even toward our employers or managers who aren't stepping up to help us out.
If this is why you're burning out,?read this week's article?where we?explore why this might be happening, and what you can do about it to prevent burnout.
Listen
This week, I talk to Kristin Kirkpatrick who shares the lessons she took from her burnout experiences, including the fact that when your plate is too full, you cannot do things to the best of your ability. Thus, you must prioritize what is essential or cut back on a few things.
