Unraveling the Depths of Human Tragedy: A Call for Compassion Amidst Brokenness

Joslin Smith disappearance: South African mother and boyfriend charged with trafficking

This morning, as my friend and I headed to our weekly park run, the conversation turned to Jocelyn's heartbreaking story. A young girl, missing, her mother and her boyfriend taken into custody. But this case isn't just about a single tragedy; it's unraveled a disturbing network. A child trafficking ring, aided by drug lords, police, and others. The chilling possibility of "Muti" killings adds another layer of horror. It's a case gripping the attention of our nation.

As we grappled with the enormity of it, I asked my friend, "Where do you stand on this?" She shared her sense of horror.

Yet, as someone engaged in systemic constellations facilitation and systemic thinking, I couldn't help but ponder the deeper dynamics.

"What drove a mother to such desperation?" I wondered aloud. My friend, familiar with systemic work, understood my question. My heart broke not just for the lost child, but also for the mother, driven by addiction to make such a tragic choice.

At that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude for a life journey that hadn't thrust such impossible choices upon me. Gratitude, too, as a mother, for never facing such dire circumstances. But amidst that gratitude, there was a sobering realization: the world is broken.

Mothers selling their children isn't an isolated practice; it's a global phenomenon. While I struggle to comprehend it, I recognize the complexity of human brokenness. Lust, greed, desperation – these are the forces at play. But where does this brokenness originate?

What beliefs permit such disconnect between parent and child?

The truth is, the world is fractured.

How do we mend it? How do we overcome a systemic belief that justifies sacrificing a child for family survival or societal acceptance? It's a tangled web of drugs, crime, and distorted values, suffused with guilt and shame.

But condemning these acts only perpetuates the cycle of brokenness. Instead, we must cultivate compassion. Compassion for all involved, recognizing that each individual is a product of their circumstances. Justice must prevail, certainly, but so must empathy.

My prayer is for transformation – for those involved to confront their brokenness, to seek redemption, and to lead their communities toward healing. It's a daunting task, but it starts with us, with acknowledging our shared humanity and our capacity for compassion. Only then can we hope to mend our broken world.
