Unpopular opinion: fundraisers are burning out fast
Welcome to this week's LinkedIn-only excerpt of the Donor Participation Project newsletter! The Donor Participation Project is a community of 6,000+ fundraisers where you can network, learn, and advance your career.
I'm feeling some urgency around the State of the Development Profession Survey.
We've launched it with Jim Langley of Langley Innovations because our profession is seeing mixed signals and we'd like to help you parse them. Are fundraisers feeling... ...overwhelmed by current challenges? ...optimistic about new opportunities? ...uncertain about the future of our field? We need your insights. This 10-minute survey is your chance to share your experiences and perspectives on what's really happening in fundraising today.
Your responses could be key to addressing our field's pressing issues of staff turnover and donor retention.
Ready to make a difference? Click below and let's shape the future of fundraising together.
P.S. If you've already taken it, please share it with your team and invite them to complete it.

Done! I did note that your survey did not include questions about environment, board/leader engagement in philanthropy, resource allocation, all of which contribute to success, and the lack of which contribute to burnout.

3 个月Good on you Louis and Jim Langley for organising this - we often say how much fundraising is not understood, which of course means what fundraisers (and donors)need is also NOT understood. For years fundraisers have compensated for this lack of understanding, by working around a dearth of time, tools and other resources. But as the pressure to deliver more and more mounts turn over grows..in 30 years of fundraising I’ve never known so many people to be leaving the sector.

3 个月I asked a very similar question on the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s page. 100+ comments and 28k impressions later. Honestly, I feel like the topic isn’t fundraiser burn out. It seems mostly to be about poor leadership and dysfunctional cultures of philanthropy.

3 个月Boards and Senior Leaders need to see the light. The reality us, we as development professionals have limited control, we can't right the until there is dramatic and monumental change. Underdeveloped was done some 12-13 years ago, and very little has changed. The real question is...how do we effectively and positively turn the tide???? I'll be honest I'm not sure how. To many of my dear friends and colleagues are simply "fried". I believe in hope so much, but we need to figure out how to make this CHANGE, not talk about it, but actually move the needle!!! Btw the toxicity of which we speak is non-profit wide not just devo!
