Unpolished Drafts - New Year
Unpolished Drafts is a collection of short thoughts, long stories, and other medium sized musings from the mind of Heather Strange.
"If you realize that all things change, there is nothing you will try to hold on to" - Lao Tzu
It’s a new year and I’ve decided to make no resolutions. Is this a novel concept – No. Is it a rejection of the popular notion of starting over – Maybe. But mostly, it’s an opportunity to embrace myself, where I am in my life, my relationships, my flaws, and my hopefulness for the future.

As the time ticked down on New Year’s Eve, we were flipping back and forth between count down shows, and my 15-year-old said “I don’t like the fact that time keeps passing.” It caught me off guard, but I responded with “Well, it’s a good thing, because you get to keep moving forward.” And as we began debating the merits of my counterpoint, the discussion became a philosophical question of how one should live: Happy in the present moment and not wanting things to change? Solely focused on the future? Is the new year a beginning or just a continuation toward the ultimate end? Heavy stuff, but lighthearted conversation.
We didn’t solve all the questions before midnight, but we did agree that life, inevitably, does and will move forward with or without you. However, you should hold the present with the same idealization you have for the future – and take every opportunity to embrace who, when, and where you are. ?
So, as we begin, yet another year, I’ll take that lesson as my mantra. Not a resolution, not a goal, but a thought to keep with me, in my back pocket for when I need a reminder. Idealize the present and embrace the moment.?

3 年In the constant movement in life, we don't take enough time to ponder these things. At my age, do I say, "Where did the time go" or do I contemplate "What direction do I want my life to go in" or do I just take each moment and embrace the experience.
