Unplugging from social media? ?? Have you thought about this?

It's June 30 which means It's National Social Media Day! ??? I mean, is anyone surprised that we now have a whole day dedicated to our favorite apps?

Don't get me wrong, I love our connected world ??, but sometimes it feels like social media can take over our lives.

I've got a confession: I'm trying to take control of my digital life. I've even banned my phone from suppertime with the kids.

And after seeing how much better I feel about myself as a mom being able to really be available when they are eating (including playing judge as to who got the bigger slice of pizza! ??) I took it a step further. Instead of diving for my phone as soon as I wake up, ?? now, my mornings are more about hot coffee ? and my to-do list for the day, than checking notifications.

Think about it. Social media is truly an enigma of the 21st century. On one hand, it brings the world to our fingertips, providing us with an unlimited supply of knowledge, inspiration, and opportunities for connection. On the other, it can very easily become a vortex of addictive scrolling that seems to suck up our time and energy before we even realize it.

As working moms, we are no strangers to the tightrope between career and family. We're skilled jugglers, balancing everything from work deadlines to soccer practices. But when we toss social media into the mix, it's like adding a flaming torch to our juggling act. Kind of risky, right?

I've been thinking a lot about the affects social media has on on time, our productivity and our most important relationships- (all those precious moments we miss, lost forever), and think that most of you would agree with me that although many of us can't imagine life without it, it can in some ways be seen as it a double-edged sword, right?

Now, I'm not saying we should swear off social media altogether. It's a fantastic tool for staying connected, informed, and even winding down. But when that consistent scroll morphs into a time-sucking cycle that steals our precious moments and attention away from our children and ourselves, it's time for a reality check, don't you agree ???

As we observe Social Media Day, I want to invite all of you, my fellow busy working moms, to take a moment and reflect on your own experience with social media.

Let's be honest with ourselves!

  • Have you ever lost track of time, all thanks to endless scrolling, and realized that half the day is gone and you're still in your comfy PJs, which can totally happen when going through your cousin's vacation photos on Instagram?
  • Has the constant need to stay connected and updated left you feeling more drained than recharged, like how I felt after spending two hours just replying to messages and comments?
  • Has your work ever suffered because you were too distracted by the happenings on social media? Just remember that deadline you missed because you got sucked into a Facebook debate.
  • Have you ever stumbled upon someone's post and ended up comparing your life with theirs, only to feel a twinge of self-doubt or remorse, like seeing your high school friend's promotion post on LinkedIn?
  • And let's not forget the all-consuming FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) - has it ever pressured you to the point of stress?

Ok, what's your story? How do you keep social media from taking over?

Some of us might feel that we aren't ready to make any changes yet, and that's ok...but even just thinking about it (especially today) is a great start!

And as you know, conversation is the best way to kickstart change.

Please share your experiences, tips, and questions you ask yourself when you have the time to think into what you wish you could change, in the comments below.

Let’s learn from each other, so that when we put our kids to bed tonight, we can feel a tiny bit better about ourselves.

Don't we deserve that?
