Unplugged

I love the quote by Anne Lamont that goes,

Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.

In 2008 after running a bootstrapped company for 20 years, I burned out.

I should have unplugged more often.

We just finished a holiday here in the US where a lot of people, including me, unplugged if only for a little while. Part of the problem with unplugging from business, however, is the guilt that goes along with it. I call it Work Guilt. That feeling of, I should be working or I’m falling behind.

Eliminating Work Guilt is an essential component of not only being a good leader but being a healthy, well-rounded person. And good leaders lead by example,

Whenever I feel Work Guilt coming on, I think about when I don’t go to the gym the day following a workout. I have to remind myself that muscle grows during recovery. It needs time to repair and grow stronger.

It’s the same concept with creativity, new ideas, and fresh approaches to business problems. We need this recovery period.

Did I work this holiday? I did. But just enough for me to stay in the flow. Not enough that it felt like a task.

So, if you’re feeling the Work Guilt, here’s your Action Item and Mission, should you decide to accept it: Swap out your Work Guilt with this thought: I will be a better Founder, manager, salesperson, leader, (fill-in-the-blank) when I am well-rested and recharged.

Take the time you need to recharge, reenergize and grow. Move past the Work Guilt. Play the long game, and be the best you can be for your team, your family, and yourself.

If you found this post helpful, please share it. Remember, one hand washes the other and together they get clean. Thank you for watching. Have a really rewarding week. And I’ll see you, more energized, next time.
