Unplug Yourself

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”

- Anne Lamott

In an earlier post, I talked about the importance of mindfulness and starting by simply focusing on your breath for 60 seconds. Today I’d like to revisit this area as it is so central to my own wellbeing. If you are drawn to research, consider this article on the many benefits of mindfulness and the supporting research. Those benefits include:

  • Decreased stress
  • Enhanced ability to deal with illness
  • Facilitation of recovery
  • Decreased depressive symptoms
  • Improved general health

In my Ontological Coaching class with the Newfield Network, we begin each session with a centering practice to help ready ourselves for the day. I had the opportunity to lead one of these centering exercises, and one of my classmates requested I share it. The practice takes you through the process of shutting yourself down and unplugging like how we shut down our computers.

I recommend listening to the entire video the first time you use it to unplug. For future use, you may wish to skip directly to the guided exercise at the 3-minute mark.

Without further ado, I invite you to unplug yourself.
