The summer season offers busy executives (and us all) a unique opportunity to step back from our work and genuinely focus on relaxation and rejuvenation.
Taking time to decompress is essential for maintaining peak performance throughout the year.
Below are activities/strategies to help YOU unwind and recharge over the summer.
(I also included some relaxing activities I have begun incorporating into my daily routine this summer. As an Executive Wellness Coach, it is important that I walk the talk and walk the walk.)
Which piques your interest? Be sure to add them to your summer plans!
?1. Cultivate Digital Boundaries
To genuinely relax, establish clear boundaries with technology.
Designate certain times of the day during the summer as no-screen periods, allowing yourself to disconnect from emails, messages, and social media. This practice not only reduces stress but also creates space for offline experiences and deeper personal connections.
2. Immerse in Nature
Natural settings have an unparalleled ability to soothe the mind.
Plan regular activities that immerse you in nature such as hiking through forests, strolling along the beach, or camping under the stars. The tranquility of the natural world will help reset your mental state and foster a sense of peace.
3. Practice Daily Mindfulness
Integrate mindfulness practices such as meditation, mindful deep-breathing exercises, or yoga into your daily routine during the summer months (and beyond).
These practices enhance your ability to stay present, reduce anxiety, and promote emotional balance. Even just a few minutes each day can have significant benefits.
I have committed this summer (and beyond) to stretching on my yoga mat each night with my pooch. It has been a wonderful opportunity to bond with Riley and calm my body and mind for restortative sleep (he comes looking for me if I forget). Plus, I wake up with fewer muscle and joint aches in the morning, a definite plus!
4. Prioritize Physical Wellness
Engage in physical activities that you enjoy and that keep your body moving.
Swimming, biking, jogging, or even walking can be invigorating.
Physical wellness is closely linked to mental well-being, and exercise is a great way to release built-up tension and boost your mood. Find a physical activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your summer routine.
5. Plan a Restorative Getaway
Consider planning a vacation that encourages a digital detox.
Whether it’s a serene mountain retreat, a calming beachfront resort, or a charming countryside inn, choose a place to unwind without work pressures.
6. Rediscover Personal Hobbies
Summer is an ideal time to dive into hobbies that bring you joy.
Whether painting, playing a musical instrument, gardening, or cooking gourmet meals, engaging in activities you love can provide a refreshing break from professional responsibilities and nurture your creative side.
This year I began teaching myself guitar via YouTube videos and online lessons. It has been an incredible stress outlet and a peaceful sanctuary from work demands.
7. Self-Improvement and Learning
While relaxation is the ultimate goal, some executives find joy and tranquility in learning and personal development.
Perhaps enroll in a short course or a workshop, or read books that intrigue you.
Learning something new can be a refreshing change and stimulate the mind in a positive way.
I recently enrolled in a Corrective Exercise Specialist Course to complete over the summer to further develop my Personal Training qualifications and enhance my Executive Wellness Coaching skills/offerings.
8. Nurture Relationships
Spending quality time with family and friends can be incredibly restorative.
Plan activities that foster connection and fun with your loved ones. Strengthening social connections can provide emotional support and create lasting memories that contribute to your overall happiness.
9. Create a Flexible, Relaxation Routine
Unlike the structured nature of a workday, your summer relaxation time can benefit from a loose but intentional routine.
Establish a daily rhythm that includes relaxing activities, exercise, nutritious meals, and adequate sleep. Consistency will help you truly decompress over time.
I have personally made this a priority for myself this summer by only working half days and committing to "no work weekends". It has been wonderful thus far and frees up more time for kayaking!
10. Mindful Consumption
Be mindful of what you consume, both in terms of food and media.

Opt for a balanced diet rich in nutrients that support energy and mental clarity. Likewise, consume positive, inspiring content that enhances your mood and perspective.
11. Limit Access to Work - Delegate and Empower
Work-related stress can overshadow relaxation efforts.
Before you take time off, delegate responsibilities and empower your team to manage day-to-day operations in your absence.
Set clear boundaries for work-related activities.
Inform your colleagues and team of your availability and the importance of your downtime to be an effective leader.
Clear communication about your availability and establishing a reliable support system will help ensure your time off is uninterrupted.
12. Engage in Wellness Retreats
Consider attending wellness retreats that offer a comprehensive approach to relaxation and personal growth. These retreats often provide guided activities like yoga, mindfulness training, and healthy eating workshops, all set in tranquil environments conducive to relaxation.
13. Reflect and Set Intentions
Use the summer months to reflect on your personal and professional goals.
Journaling can be an effective way to process thoughts and set intentions for the future.
This practice encourages a deeper understanding of your aspirations and can bring a sense of clarity and purpose.
I find some of my best thinking and creative ideas come to me at the gym, kayaking, or riding my bike!
