Unpaid Internship - New Normal ?

Unpaid Internship - New Normal ?

Recently i came across this advertisement by a start up -

- As we are a startup, currently we will not offer any salary for 3 months.

- After 3 months based on performance, you shall be hired by the company.

They wanted to hire the best Software Engineers and the selection process is quite elaborate.

Just imagine the plight of Engineering Grads from different Colleges aspiring to start their Corporate Career in 2021

Internship Market is getting more and more challenging with fewer options that pay and rest all are unpaid

What is the reason for this fall from grace ?

  • More colleges focus only on academic scores
  • Large Companies do not take any internships
  • Few Companies take interns pay during the internship and eventually make a job offer - JP Morgan, RBS and Goldman Sachs
  • Lack of Mentors in the companies taking bring Engineering Students as Interns causing the entire exercise to be a sham

What Next ?

  • There has to be better coordination between Companies hiring and College Management
  • A token amount of internship for the time they are spending during the internship
  • Shorter duration 3 months
  • Change of mindset of all hiring companies to first try internship and eventually hire them once they complete the course
  • Fewer cases of dropping after picking the offers - since students are already exposed to the work environment and culture

Please add your points and let us make this more a pleasant experience rather than exploiting the talent due to the extreme market conditions.

Having interned at various companies, I have found every experience extremely rewarding. I consider internships to be a two way interview, where the employer and the intern both assess each other before potentially working full time. It gives the intern the enough time to get accustomed to working environment as education given to them tends to be more theory based than practical. In addition, it also helps one to learn about the expectations in a working environment. That being said, students/interns can be taken advantage of by being overworked and underpaid (or worse, unpaid) as students just want some experience to get their foot in the door.

No, people should deny to accept unpaid internships. It's an exploitation of the youth in the name of training.
