Unpacking Remote Work Concerns

I've been at the forefront of some exciting shifts in the industry – particularly in how we work. Remote work has transitioned from a temporary necessity to a staple of professional life for many.?
A lot of the firms we work with at Minted Search Group are either maintaining or increasing their remote work options.
This shift isn't just about convenience; it's about adapting to a changing world where flexibility and work-life balance have taken centre stage.
For accounting and finance professionals, this means access to a broader range of opportunities that were once limited by geographical boundaries.
I write a lot about why remote work is not just a trend, but a career accelerator (like here, and here too), but some professionals are sceptical about the effect remote work could have on their careers.?
So instead of going on about how great and arguably important remote and hybrid working is, I want to address some of the most common questions and concerns candidates come to me with about remote work.
Q: Will working remotely hinder my career growth and opportunities for advancement?
A: Remote work isn't a roadblock to moving up in your career. In fact, lots of companies see the upside of having employees work from home, like getting more done and having fewer distractions. Sure, it can be a bit tricky to keep building your professional network from a distance, but with the right online tools and a bit of effort in virtual meet-ups, you can make it work.
A recent study covered by Forbes even highlights that the rise of remote work could be changing the career advancement formula, encouraging companies to recognise output over presence and potentially resulting in a shift in how promotions are awarded
So, my advice? Stay active and visible, both in your company and your field, and remote work could actually help your career takeoff.
Q: How can I build and maintain a strong professional network remotely?
A: Building and maintaining a strong professional network while working remotely is definitely doable, ultimately it’s about being active and genuine in your efforts. Dive into social media, especially LinkedIn, to share your work and connect with others. Also, remember that networking is about mutual support, so always look for ways to offer value to your contacts.

Q: How do employers view remote work experience during the hiring process?
Employer attitudes toward remote work experience have definitely shifted positively in recent years, especially following the pandemic. Having remote work experience can be seen as a strong asset by prospective employers who value adaptability and are experienced in managing teams.
Many employers and hiring managers recognise that remote work hones important skills such as self-motivation, time management, and digital communication, and that’s not just in my own experience working with firms - a survey by Owl Labs found 84% of employers believe remote work does not hinder an employee's career progression.
Q: How can I negotiate for remote work in my current job or in a new position?
A: Negotiating for remote work, whether in your current job or a new position, requires a strategic approach focused on demonstrating the benefits to your employer.?
Compile evidence of your productivity in remote settings, and use quantifiable results where possible. Emphasise outcomes like cost savings for the company and improved work-life balance for yourself.?
For new positions, broach the subject after establishing your suitability but before finalising the offer. Demonstrating flexibility and a plan for consistent communication and collaboration can help persuade your employer to agree to remote work arrangements.
