Unpacking Memories: How My Bookshelf Mirrors My Career Journey

I'll admit it – I'm a total bookworm.
The dusty smell of old books or freshly printed pages, the feel of the spine in my hand... There's something magical about the promise held within their covers.
While unpacking some old boxes, I recently stumbled upon a treasure trove of books that sparked a wave of reflection. They seemed to chronicle different chapters of my life and mirrored my evolving journey.
The Road Less Travelled (M. Scott Peck)?– This one found me during a time of solo living when life felt messy and confusing. Its pages held comfort as I navigated the life challenges.
Man's Search for Meaning (Viktor Frankl)?– A book forever carved in my mind. I read it while travelling Europe and visiting Auschwitz. It offered immense perspective on resilience and finding purpose amidst suffering.
Life of Pi (Yann Martel)?– My time in London on a working holiday is inseparably tied to this Booker Prize winner. Then, simply a striking cover on a bookstore shelf, it later became a treasured read on my return to Sydney – a stimulant to fascinating discussions in a book club.
The Dance of Intimacy (Harriet Lerner)?– A breakup with my first husband led me here, opening my eyes to personal gaps in vulnerability and connection, themes I hadn't realized needed work.
The Gifts of Imperfection (Brené Brown)?– Motherhood brought a fresh wave of challenges, and with it came Brown's wisdom. I'd always considered myself ambitious and driven, but perfectionism took on a whole new meaning after having children.
These books became snapshots of personal seasons: times of uncertainty, transformative travel, and major life transitions. It dawned on me that, like the protagonists in these stories, I've grown and evolved significantly over time. My professional world has followed a similar path.

Looking at these titles, it struck me how similar we are to books. We hold unique stories within, evolving and changing over time. The people we meet and our experiences become part of our narrative. This bookshelf analogy made me think of my career. I've held various titles, just like a book – some roles have been short stories, others full-fledged novels. I've also been blessed to work with a diverse array of colleagues, some of whom have blossomed into lasting friendships.
However, the most profound marks on my path have been made by the leaders I've been privileged to work with and who took me under their wings. The mentors who understood that growth means extending grace, even when I stumbled balancing work challenges with my personal circumstances. Leaders who trusted me with opportunities and who gave honest feedback that spurred me on. I couldn't have learned these lessons from any textbook.
As someone passionate about people and leadership, their impact reminds me of our responsibility. Often, our teams don't feel the true value of our guidance at the moment; rather, it resonates years later with profound clarity.
To those leaders and colleagues who have left their mark on me - thank you. Your imprint shaped the person I am today.
