Unpacking Creativity: Bringing Back the Creative "Rizz"

Ah, creativity!

The mere mention of the word conjures images of boundless innovation, fresh ideas, and the liberating feeling of unbridled imagination. Research suggests that each of us has experienced creative peaks during our childhood, likely fueled by an unapologetic imagination and the desire to twirl into a world of endless possibilities. Recently, a senior leader in a well-established conglomerate shared a thought with me – creativity, once a vibrant force in each of us, now seems to dwindle, relegated to just another line in select job descriptions.

This casual remark sparked a profound set of reflections in my mind! And so, I set to type these out in this article... Where did we lose the vibrant "rizz" of creativity? And more importantly, how do we reignite it?

The first question prompts a reconsideration of our own relentless pursuit of faster and more efficient solutions, complete with perfectly dotted 'i's and crossed 't's. Could this quest for precision be stifling our ability to generate fresh ideas? Moreover, the misconception that creativity is confined to specific domains like art, design, marketing, or high-tech seems to have erected a few more unnecessary barriers. To add to this, our collective desire to be right at every turn, to succeed unerringly, may also be strangling the hand of creativity. Of course, reflecting on our work environments and incentive structures may reveal yet another layer to this puzzle.

All these reasons may have boxed our creative streak in - agreed.

Yet, I am here to make a case for this essential skill in the modern workplace.

Let me share thoughts on why creativity is so crucial and how can we usher it back into the forefront of our professional lives.

The Essential Role of Creativity

Creativity is not a mere embellishment; it's a major cornerstone of innovation. In a rapidly evolving landscape, where challenges demand ingenious solutions, the ability to think creatively becomes paramount. It's not confined to specific roles or industries; rather, it's a universally valuable skill that can elevate performance across the board. This facet needs to be acknowledged.

Breaking Free from Conventional Definitions

As mentioned before, one common roadblock to the resurgence of creativity is the confined view that it only belongs in certain arenas. It's not just about crafting a masterpiece, designing a stunning campaign, or coding a groundbreaking app. It's critical for each of us to understand that creativity permeates every aspect of problem-solving, decision-making, and strategy formulation. By broadening our understanding, we can reclaim the imaginative spirit that has been unnecessarily compartmentalized.

Embracing a Culture of Acceptance

Creativity flourishes in environments that embrace experimentation and celebrate both success and failure. The fear of making mistakes often hinders creative thinking. This is where "failure culture" truly wins the game. Encouraging trials and quick failures in work environments that are safe - both cognitively and mentally - will boost creativity beyond what mere workshops and conferences vouch to do.

Reevaluating Incentive Structures

If we're serious about rekindling creativity in the workplace, it's time to reevaluate our incentive structures. Recognizing and rewarding creative contributions should become an integral part of performance assessments and recognitions. This shift will then communicate a clear message – creativity is not just welcomed; it's valued.

Rekindling the Flame Within

To reignite the flame of creativity within ourselves, we must be willing to tap back into our days of flexible thinking and problem-solving. Yes, the very days from our early childhood where our mind wasn't yet saddled with the notion of only obsessing over how things could go wrong. We need to challenge our assumptions, question the status quo, and break free from the shackles of rigid thinking. It's about embracing uncertainty, fostering an open dialogue, and empowering every individual to contribute to the creative tapestry of the workplace.

My 5 Tips to Reignite Creativity Within:

  1. Consider Diverse Input Channels: Surround yourself with diverse sources of inspiration, whether it's books, podcasts, or discussions with people from different backgrounds. This is the era of knowledge and variety at your fingertips. Remember - exposure to varied perspectives fuels creativity. You don't want to miss out on this.
  2. Take Regular Mind Breaks: Schedule short breaks during work to clear your mind. We're often juggling too much in a day and this tends to mute out the sound of our brain thinking new things. A stroll, a few minutes of mindfulness, or even a change of scenery can refresh your perspective and stimulate creative thinking.
  3. Engage in Collaborative Sessions: You're surrounded by creativity in the form of the people around you. Take inspiration and broaden your horizons by engaging in collaborative brainstorming sessions with colleagues. You can also just connect with people around you to hear their perspectives on things. Absorb, engage and learn!
  4. Keep a Creativity Journal: Capture your ideas, no matter how small, in a dedicated creativity journal... yes, it need not always be on paper! There are plenty of apps out there for this. But, this practice helps capture your ideas and then reviewing and revisiting these thoughts can spark new connections and insights over time.
  5. Experiment with the Gamut of Problem-Solving: Don't let your thinking get stale and rigid. Approach challenges through different lenses. Instead of opting for the first solution that comes to mind, experiment with various approaches. This fosters a mindset of continuous exploration.

Finally, in the quest to bring back the "rizz" in creativity, let's remember that the journey is as important as the destination. Trust me - creativity isn't lost; it's just waiting to be rediscovered, encouraged, and celebrated in every corner of our professional lives.
