Unnecessary Clothes Adjustment

Unnecessary Clothes Adjustment

One of the things I see all the time and people don't realise, which I call is, 'unnecessary clothes adjustment'. So what is it?

Well, when we stand up to speak, or attention is drawn towards us, if we aren't made aware of it, everyone stands and grabs their clothing. It may be the tie (does anyone wear a tie any more) or, most commonly, adjust the pants or pull the jacket tightly across the chest.

Is it because your clothes don't fit, you were sitting oddly or perhaps you need better underwear? Of course, it may well be, but usually, it is a stress response.

It's a tiny thing, but it is great to get rid of for two reasons.

1. It sends a message of stress to others

2. Recognising it and stopping the habit is a way of taking control and not allowing your unconscious mind to run the show.

When you repeatedly touch or adjust your outfit, the audience's attention is pulled away from what you're saying, and instead, they focus on your movements. This subtle but constant distraction can make you appear less confident and disengaged, even if your words are powerful.

Unnecessary clothes adjustment can affect your internal state. While it may seem like a small, subconscious action, it reinforces feelings of discomfort and insecurity. By becoming aware of this habit and stopping it, you not only present yourself more confidently, but you also reduce your overall stress, helping you feel more grounded and focused in any high-pressure situation.

Your action is to bring awareness to the moment and see what you do.

Let me hear your thoughts.

Love Dr Louise Mahler
