Make Your Application Shine!

The range of volunteering, internships, and apprenticeships available in the motorsport industry right now is inspiring. These opportunities are golden, and I urge you to grab them with both hands. To boost your chances and stand out, here are some essential tips based on my recent experience with receiving applications:

Polish Your Presentation

  • Spellcheck Everything: Minor spelling errors can make a bad first impression. Take the time to review your spelling meticulously.
  • Proper Names and Punctuation: Ensure all names are correctly spelled, punctuation is spot on, and you've used Capital Letters where required. It shows attention to detail and respect.

Align Your Application

  • Match Your Skills and Passion: Tailor your application to reflect how your experiences and passions align with the job requirements. Customisation is key.
  • Respect Age Requirements: If there’s a minimum age listed, it’s there for a reason, typically related to insurance or safety regulations. Respect these guidelines and save your energy for roles you qualify for.

Be Original

  • If Using AI, Like ChatGPT, Personalise It: AI can be a great tool to get started, but make sure to personalise what it generates. Recruiters can spot generic responses easily. Stand out by making sure you use your unique voice and experiences.
  • Proofread AI Assistance: Double-check for placeholders like [insert name here] that can slip through. It’s a common oversight that can derail your application. The number of [insert name here] emails I receive a week is insane!

Treat Every Application as The Big One

  • Meticulous Care: Approach each application as if it’s your dream job. Small details matter — cross your t’s and dot your i’s.
  • Show Genuine Interest: Demonstrate why you’re passionate about this particular opportunity. Genuine enthusiasm is noticeable and can be the deciding factor.
  • Respect the Process: While it’s important to show your enthusiasm, constantly following up on your application and pushing to be noticed can be counterproductive. Submit your application and wait for the specified response time before following up. If you haven’t heard back within that period, a single polite inquiry is appropriate. This shows you respect the hiring team’s process and time, they often deal with hundreds and sometimes thousands of applications just for a single position - it's impossible to give personal feedback to so many applicants.

And finally, for a short time only our friends at RACE (Rapid Axle Concept Evolution) MBS Software have an EPIC deal for you to allow you to enhance your CV! Find out more here: https://formulacareers.com/fcblog/race-software-x-formula-careers-offer/

Wishing you, from my heart, the absolute best of luck with all your applications. And whatever you're doing this week, do it with passion!

My goal right now is becoming a Garage Technician or finding a Trainee position with a racing team (the dream being in F1, of course!). The barrier to entry is very high for those opportunities in F1 despite being 'entry level' but still, the work I've put in so far has brought on secondary opportunities I didn't think of when I first started and experiences/know-how that are applicable in any industry, not just motorsport. Most of us won't have our day in F1 but to me it's still a great standard to base myself on so it is still worth trying and seeing where we land as a result. Would love to have Adrian's book :). Ran into him and Martin Brundle walking in Old Montreal a few years ago with a friend of mine who has since gone on to work in consulting for automotive production.

My dream job in motorsports; become a Race Engineer. Working in the engineering space within F1 would already be a feat; however, being the engineer that utilises the drivers personal feedback to tweak the vehicle for optimal performance during a race, now that would be amazing. Being a Race Engineer, would get me as close as possible to knowing how it feels to “drive” the car, even if that’s only figurative.

In the pulsating heart of Formula 1, where the roar of engines is a symphony and the racetrack a canvas, lies the dream job of an aerodynamicist. It's a role where passion and precision dance in harmony, where every curve and contour of a racing car is a testament to the relentless pursuit of perfection. To be an aerodynamicist in this world is to hold the power to sculpt the wind, to bend the very air to your will, and to watch as the machines you've poured your soul into slice through the atmosphere with grace and ferocity. It's not just a job; it's the alchemy of science and art, a place where every minute adjustment can be the difference between victory and the void. This is my dream job in motorsport.
