When facing unmet expectation challenges, what emotions tend to come up for you? Frustration, stress, anger, blame, or shame??
I had a coaching conversation with a client about Unmet Expectations, which inspired me to write about it.??
I've met many leaders and high achievers who often say they have high standards for themselves and others. When their performance or team doesn't meet these standards and expectations, negative emotions seem to arise. These negative emotions could be a stress reservoir, resulting in the leader losing calm and presence.?
If this resonates with you and you want to shift your behaviors and cultivate a more balanced, composed approach to unmet expectations, this article could be helpful.?
First of all, let's explore your expectations and frustrations more.?
Understanding the Root Causes of Frustration
When facing unmet expectations, it's crucial to delve into the root causes of your frustrations. Ask yourself: what specific aspects of the situation trigger your negative emotions? Is it a lack of control, unmet personal standards, or perhaps the perceived failure of others?
Most of us go through our days without pausing and acknowledging what's going on in our heads or feelings. By identifying these triggers, you can begin to understand and manage your emotional responses better.
Strategies to Stay Calm and Maintain Presence
I have two strategies that have helped my clients to manage their cool in their leadership journey.
Reframe Your Perspective
The first strategy for managing unmet expectations is to reframe your perspective on the situation. Instead of viewing unmet expectations as failures or thinking less of yourself, see them as opportunities for growth and learning as a leader. This shift in mindset can help you approach challenges with curiosity and openness rather than frustration and disappointment.
Start by asking yourself constructive questions such as:
These questions can help transform your thoughts and setbacks into valuable lessons that contribute to your personal and professional development.
Another aspect of reframing your perspective is acknowledging the effort and progress made, even if the outcome wasn't as expected. Celebrate small wins and milestones along the way, and use these as building blocks for future success. This approach not only reduces stress but also boosts morale and motivation within your team.
Shifting your mindset from a fixed perspective to a growth-oriented one can significantly reduce stress and foster resilience. It allows you to view challenges as part of the journey toward excellence rather than as obstacles blocking your path.
Change the Questions You Ask Yourself
As a leader, it’s important to recognize that your role is to guide and influence rather than to do all the work yourself. Often, leaders find themselves slipping into the roles of doer or controller, which can be counterproductive. To shift into a more effective leadership and coaching role, consider asking yourself the following questions to stay grounded:

By regularly reflecting on these questions, you can shift your mindset from doing and controlling to leading and coaching. This not only helps maintain your calm and presence but also cultivates a more empowered and effective team.

Adding accountability creates a more meaningful journey.
It could be lonely at the top, trying to develop yourself without accountability and support. Engaging with mentors, colleagues, or a coach to seek feedback on your progress can be more rewarding and help you fasten the learning process.? Having someone hold you accountable can provide additional motivation and insights into areas for improvement. Regular check-ins with a trusted advisor can help you stay on track and make necessary adjustments.
